High-Voltage Aqueous Mg-Ion Batteries Enabled by Solvation Structure Reorganization

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: This research proposes an eco-friendly and high safety aqueous Mg-ion electrolyte (AME) with a wide electrochemical stability window. The AME is designed by reorganizing the solvation structure of the electrolyte, which significantly improves its physicochemical and electrochemical properties. The testing of V2O5 nanowires in the new AME shows promising results, indicating high initial discharge/charge capacity and capacity retention. Additionally, the study observes a unique phase formed through electrochemical Mg-ion intercalation at room temperature and reveals the cathode electrolyte interphase in aqueous Mg-ion batteries for the first time.

LiF-rich and self-repairing interface induced by MgF2 engineered separator enables dendrite-free lithium metal batteries

Liwen Tan et al.

Summary: A facile and low-cost strategy of coating MgF2 onto a commercial polyethylene separator is proposed to enable dendrite-free and long-life lithium metal batteries. The MgF2 coating can react with Li metal to form an artificial solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, and a small amount of dissolved MgF2 can repair cracks in the SEI layer. This design protects the Li metal anode, reduces nucleation overpotential, promotes smooth Li plating, and inhibits dendrite growth.
