Hydrogen production by methane pyrolysis in molten binary copper alloys

David Scheiblehner et al.

Summary: The utilization of hydrogen as an energy carrier and reduction agent is crucial for a sustainable future, and steam reforming of methane is the primary method for hydrogen production. However, it generates carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Methane pyrolysis offers a carbon dioxide-free alternative, producing solid carbon along with hydrogen. This study investigates different molten copper alloys as catalytic media for methane pyrolysis, demonstrating their influence on methane conversion rate and carbon properties. Optimizing these parameters is essential for achieving economic competitiveness.

Modelling the hydrodynamics and kinetics of methane decomposition in catalytic liquid metal bubble reactors for hydrogen production

Lionel J. J. Catalan et al.

Summary: Bubble reactors using molten metal alloys with strong catalytic activity are a promising technology for reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen production. The hydrodynamics of bubble flow in molten metal plays an important role in reactor performance. A reactor model has been developed and validated with experimental data to optimize the design of multitubular catalytic bubble reactors. The optimization includes minimizing the total liquid metal volume to achieve high hydrogen production rates and methane conversions.

Enhanced efficiency in CO2-free hydrogen production from methane in a molten liquid alloy bubble column reactor with zirconia beads

Yong-Gyu Noh et al.

Summary: The study proposed a new method for hydrogen production through catalytic methane pyrolysis using a multi-stage bubble column reactor with liquid metal alloy catalysts. The 3-stage bubble column reactor showed higher methane conversion rates compared to the 2-stage reactor at high temperatures. Analysis of the carbon products revealed that similar carbon-based materials can be obtained from both reactors.

Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Hydrogen Production Processes: Turquoise Hydrogen vs. Steam Methane Reforming

Gayatri Udaysinh Ingale et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is versatile in the energy sector, but traditional production methods emit a large amount of CO2. Carbon capture storage technology can reduce emissions, with steam methane reforming and methane pyrolysis being the main production methods. Methane pyrolysis can produce CO2-free turquoise hydrogen and reduce emissions significantly.

Methane pyrolysis in a molten gallium bubble column reactor for sustainable hydrogen production: Proof of concept & techno-economic assessment

Brandon Jose Leal Perez et al.

Summary: Currently, nearly 50% of global hydrogen production is derived from Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), which leads to significant CO2 emissions and exacerbates global warming. The use of methane pyrolysis with melts of metals and salts produces less CO2 and offers a more sustainable route to generate hydrogen, with the added benefit of valuable carbon co-product sales potential. Techno-economic and sensitivity analyses suggest that the molten metal technology can compete with SMR if co-product carbon is saleable and a CO2 tax is imposed.
