Dry reforming of methane in an atmospheric pressure glow discharge: Confining the plasma to expand the performance

Bart Wanten et al.

Summary: The study introduces a confined atmospheric pressure glow discharge plasma reactor with excellent performance in dry reforming, achieving CO2 and CH4 conversion rates of 64% and 94% respectively. This outstanding performance is attributed to the plasma confinement, maximizing the gas passing through the active region.

Insight into the synthesis of alcohols and acids in plasma-driven conversion of CO2 and CH4 over copper-based catalysts

Yuezhao Wang et al.

Summary: This study successfully controlled the distribution of oxygenates in the plasma-catalytic conversion of CO2 and CH4 by exploiting the electronic structure and acidic properties of copper-based catalysts. The Cu2+ species promoted the formation of alcohols, while Cu+ species were critical for enhancing acetic acid production. The Brunsted acid sites of HZSM-5 greatly improved the selectivity of acetic acid, and the synergy between isolated Cu+ center and Brunsted acid sites showed potential for acetic acid formation. Possible pathways for the formation of alcohols and acetic acids were also discussed.

On the kinetics and equilibria of plasma-based dry reforming of methane

Y. Uytdenhouwen et al.

Summary: Plasma reactors are being studied for gas-based chemical conversion, with a focus on the relationship between plasma chemistry and conditions. Experiments show differences in kinetic characteristics and partial chemical equilibrium states between CO2 dissociation and CH4 reforming reactions, and how these are influenced by combining both gases in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction. The addition of a packing material can also impact the conversion rate and equilibrium position, depending on the gas composition.

How gas flow design can influence the performance of a DBD plasma reactor for dry reforming of methane

Y. Uytdenhouwen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel DBD plasma reactor design and investigates factors such as the shape and size of the reaction zone, gradual gas addition, and gas mixing on the conversion rate and product composition of DRM. It is found that the choice of main gas, gas flow direction, and gas inlet position significantly impact conversion rate and energy cost.

Yaolin Wang et al.

Summary: A hybrid machine learning model has been developed for predicting and optimizing a gliding arc plasma tar reforming process using naphthalene as a model tar compound. The model, which combines three algorithms, shows good agreement between experimental data and predicted results. Optimization of hyper-parameters using genetic algorithm reveals the critical parameters for conversion and energy efficiency, leading to identification of optimal processing parameters for achieving maximum tar conversion, carbon balance, and energy efficiency.
