A state-of-the-art review on wastewater treatment techniques: the effectiveness of adsorption method

Ruhma Rashid et al.

Summary: Water contamination from toxic pollutants like dyes, heavy metals, and surfactants has become a global challenge, leading to increasing efforts to develop effective wastewater treatment techniques. Various methods such as chemical oxidation, physical adsorption, and biological treatments have been recognized. Among these, adsorption is considered a simple, sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly technique for wastewater treatment, but further research and development are needed for practical implementation in a wide range of applications.

Treatment technologies for emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Prangya R. Rout et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) are unregulated anthropogenic chemicals that persist in the environment and are considered contaminants of emerging environmental concerns. Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

Selective reduction of epoxy groups in graphene oxide membrane for ultrahigh water permeation

Ruobing Yi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the precise selective reduction of graphene oxide (GO) flakes with low epoxy content but high hydroxyl content using modified electron beam irradiation (EBI), leading to the fabrication of GO membranes with ultrahigh water permeation and effective rejection of dyes and multivalent metal ions. New hydroxyl groups generated by reducing epoxy using hydrogen radicals play a key role in controlling selective reduction and enhancing water purification performance of the membranes.

Advanced graphene oxide-based membranes as a potential alternative for dyes removal: A review

Eduarda Freitas Diogo Januario et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) is a well-known derivative of graphene with excellent properties, and its functionalization in membranes has shown significant improvements in performance, particularly in antifouling behavior, selectivity, and flux for wastewater treatment. Research on the use of GO-based membranes for dye removal in water treatment is advancing, offering promising future prospects in this field.

Fabrication Techniques for Graphene Oxide-Based Molecular Separation Membranes: Towards Industrial Application

Ohchan Kwon et al.

Summary: The review discusses eight physical methods for the fabrication of GO membranes, categorizing them based on batch-unit or continuous production into five small-scale (vacuum filtration, pressure-assisted filtration, spin coating, dip coating, drop-casting) and three large-scale (spray coating, bar/doctor blade coating, slot die coating) approaches. Large-scale methods offer the advantage of continuous production which is not limited by equipment dimensions but rather material availability, while small-scale methods are restricted by the size of the fabrication device.

A Facile and Scalable Method of Fabrication of Large-Area Ultrathin Graphene Oxide Nanofiltration Membrane

Zhiyu Liu et al.

Summary: The scalable ultrathin uniform GO membrane fabrication technique reported in this study utilizes Mayer rod-coating and short-time, high-power UV reduction to produce large area, thin GO membranes. The interlayer spacing of the membrane can be effectively reduced and regulated to improve salt rejection rate, while the fabricated membrane shows superior water permeability and high separation efficiency, along with excellent mechanical stability under harsh conditions. The developed fabrication method can be scaled up using a roll-to-roll industrial production process, solving the current bottleneck in GO membrane research and enabling industrial usage of GO membrane.

Graphene-Based Membranes for Water and Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Prangya Bhol et al.

Summary: Graphene-based membrane materials are considered advanced materials to meet global freshwater supply needs, with significant impact from membrane fabrication techniques and operating conditions on separation and fouling mechanisms. Hybrid graphene membranes have advantages over traditional polymeric membranes, but more attention is needed on water permeability and membrane selectivity.
