Supersensitive Ratiometric Thermometry and Manometry Based on Dual-Emitting Centers in Eu2+/Sm2+-Doped Strontium Tetraborate Phosphors

Teng Zheng et al.

Summary: The concept of optical temperature sensing using band intensity ratio is a highly effective and non-invasive technique. In this study, a dual-center system, SrB4O7:Eu2+/Sm2+ phosphors, was employed as a bifunctional sensor for temperature and pressure. The phosphors showed high sensitivity and pressure dependence, making them promising candidates for optical sensing applications.

Pressure-triggered enormous redshift and enhanced emission in Ca2Gd8Si6O26:Ce3+ phosphors: Ultrasensitive, thermally-stable and ultrafast response pressure monitoring

Teng Zheng et al.

Summary: By designing a series of Ce3(+)-activated Ca2Gd8Si6O26 phosphors, we have overcome the challenges of pressure monitoring with high sensitivity. These phosphors can emit a blue-violet luminescence when excited with UV light. The optimal doping content for Ce3(+) ions in the phosphors is 3 mol%, which exhibits outstanding performance.

Luminescence thermometry with transition metal ions. A review

L. Marciniak et al.

Summary: Transition metal ion-activated phosphors have strong absorption and emission bands in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, making them sensitive to temperature variations. By observing temperature-induced changes in emission intensities, bandwidths and shifts, excited state lifetimes, and intensity ratios between emission bands, sensitive and reliable remote temperature measurements can be achieved. This review systematically analyzes the performance of luminescent thermometers based on different transition metal ions and discusses the relationship between their spectroscopic properties, host material structure, and thermometric performance. The engineering of energy transfer between transition metal and other dopant ions for highly sensitive thermometers is highlighted, along with several typical application examples from recent literature.

Predicting the Optical Pressure Sensitivity of 2E → 4A2 Spin-Flip Transition in Cr3+-Doped Crystals

Michele Back et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of material chemistry in increasing the pressure sensitivity of new optical pressure probes is crucial in scientific research. Ruby remains the standard pressure probe in diamond anvil cell experiments worldwide, despite being proposed almost 50 years ago. Analyzing Cr3+-based pressure sensors in terms of crystal field, nephelauxetic effect, and bulk modulus can help predict highly sensitive optical pressure sensors.
