Ball-milled bismuth oxybromide/biochar composites with enhanced removal of reactive red owing to the synergy between adsorption and photodegradation

Yidan Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, bismuth oxybromide/biochar composites were synthesized using a ball milling method for synergistic adsorption and photodegradation of Reactive red 120. The results of the characterizations showed that ball milling changed the crystallization, increased the surface area, and improved the charge transfer ability of biochar. The 70% BiOBr/BC composite demonstrated the highest removal efficiency for RR120, indicating its enhanced removal ability through adsorption and photodegradation. The biochar acted as a support for preventing the aggregation of BiOBr and as a transporter for promoting the separation of photo-induced carriers in the composites. BiOBr could release the adsorption sites on the composite's surface through degradation, facilitating the removal of RR120 and regenerating the photocatalyst for reuse. The strong interactions between BiOBr and biochar in the composites, resulting from ball milling, were beneficial for charge transfer and synergistic removal through adsorption and degradation.

One-step hydrothermal carbonization of amine modified black liquor and lignin for efficient Cr(VI) adsorption

Yuxin Tian et al.

Summary: Amine modified black liquor (BL) and purified lignin (PL) derived biochar were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) with hexamethylenediamine (HMDA). The physico-chemical properties of biochar were characterized using various analytical techniques. The adsorption performance of biochar was systematically investigated, and the effects of experimental parameters such as initial concentration of pollutant, contact time, solution pH, and coexisting ions were studied. The study found significant differences in the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) on biochar prepared by BL and PL under the optimal hydrothermal temperature. Amine modification enhanced the adsorption performance of biochar, especially for PL biochar. The results showed the potential of amine-modified BL biochar for the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.
