Iron Nitride Nanoparticles for Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination of Trichloroethylene

Miroslav Brumovsky et al.

Summary: The article discusses the significant enhancement in reactivity and corrosion resistance of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) through nitriding. The study demonstrates the outstanding catalytic performance of iron nitrides (FexN) in various applications and their potential as a tool for trichloroethylene (TCE) dechlorination. The research findings provide valuable insights into the application of nitriding nanoparticles in environmental remediation.

Enhanced elimination of V 5+ in wastewater using zero-valent iron activated by ball milling: The overlooked crucial roles of energy input and sodium chloride

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: Ball-milling technology is an efficient and cost-effective method for enhancing the decontamination efficiency of zero-valent iron (ZVI). This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of pH, process control agents, and main process parameters on the removal of V5+ using ball-milled ZVI. The results revealed the successful activation of ZVI through mechanochemical action and the significant enhancement in V5+ elimination by ZVIbm under near-neutral conditions. The introduction of NaCl in the ball milling process alleviated agglomeration and improved the activity of ZVIbm. Excessive energy input, however, weakened the reactivity of ZVIbm on V5+ elimination. The results provided valuable insights into the remediation of vanadium-containing wastewater using ZVIbm.

Coincorporation of N and S into Zero-Valent Iron to Enhance TCE Dechlorination: Kinetics, Electron Efficiency, and Dechlorination Capacity

Li Gong et al.

Summary: Sulfidation and nitridation synergistically increased the dechlorination rate of trichloroethene by S-N(C)-mZVI(bm), showcasing a higher reaction constant than S-mZVI(bm) and N(C)-mZVI(bm). The multiheteroatom incorporation approach optimized ZVI for groundwater remediation, providing a basis for further advances in reactive material synthesis.

Simply closing the reactor improves the electron efficiency of zerovalent iron toward various metal(loid)s removal

Peng Fan et al.

Summary: By simply closing the reactor, the electron efficiency and specific removal capacity of ZVI for four metal(loid)s increased significantly, while the removal kinetics was slightly affected. The consumption-redissolution process of DO and corrosion of ZVI were decelerated under closed condition, leading to improved selectivity in metal(loid)s removal.

FeNX(C)-Coated Microscale Zero-Valent Iron for Fast and Stable Trichloroethylene Dechlorination in both Acidic and Basic pH Conditions

Li Gong et al.

Summary: FeNX species can be the active sites for adsorption and activation of reactants in Fe single-atom catalysts. The combination of FeNX species with granular zero-valent iron (ZVI) can result in catalyzed reductive decontamination of groundwater contaminants. The newly developed N-C-mZV(Ibm) material showed higher dechlorination rates for trichloroethylene (TCE) than bare mZV(Ibm), especially at a wide range of pH values.

Core-shell ZVI@carbon composites reduce phosphate inhibition of ZVI dissolution and enhance methane production in an anaerobic sewage treatment

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of achieving energy recovery from phosphate-containing domestic sewage using an efficient anaerobic reactor with ZVI addition. The inhibitory effects of phosphate on ZVI dissolution are weakened by the use of ZVI@carbon composites, which promote methane production. The interaction between Fe2+ ions and phosphate concentrations and the surface passivation layer formation on ZVI are key factors influencing the effectiveness of ZVI in the presence of phosphate.

Oxalate Modification Dramatically Promoted Cr(VI) Removal with Zero-Valent Iron

Minzi Liao et al.

Summary: Oxalate modification significantly enhances the removal performance of ZVI for Cr(VI) by promoting electron transfer and increasing surface Fe(II) production. The continuous high removal activity of OA-ZVI for Cr(VI) after multiple cycles demonstrates its potential for practical application in treating Cr(VI)-containing wastewaters. The study highlights the importance of surface functional groups in enhancing the Cr(VI) removal property of ZVI and provides an environmentally friendly surface modification method.
