Effect of the length and aromaticity of N3-substituent on adsorption performance of imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquids) towards Pd (II)

Xin Kou et al.

Summary: Imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquids) have attracted attention for precious metal adsorption, but their performance optimization is hindered by a lack of understanding of the structure-adsorption performance relationship. This study found that altering the N3-substitute can affect the electron and charge distributions of the imidazolium cations, ultimately influencing their adsorption performances for PdCl42-. Additionally, longer N3 alkyl chains were found to lead to more hydrogen bonds with PdCl42-, which is beneficial for adsorption, but unfavorable for attracting anions due to a decrease in electrostatic potential.
