Transformation of industrial and organic waste into titanium doped activated carbon-cellulose nanocomposite for rapid removal of organic pollutants

Qaisar Maqbool et al.

Summary: The study reports the effective utilization of industrial metal and organic waste to produce three types of nanomaterials, which demonstrate efficient removal of organic pollutants from wastewater through surface adsorption and photocatalysis. The synergy of mutated graphene-like carbon adsorption and Ti nanostructures-assisted photocatalysis, enhanced by the good supporting capacity of NCel for Ti-ACNs distribution, contributes to the increased efficiency of Ti-AC-Cel-NC.

Co-pyrolysis of industrial sludge and rice straw: Synergistic effects of biomass on reaction characteristics, biochar properties and heavy metals solidification

Bo Peng et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the co-pyrolysis of sludge and biomass to produce biochar with solidification of heavy metals. The study investigates the synergistic coupling mechanism, surface functional groups, and pore structure characteristics of the co-pyrolytic biochar. It also examines the solidification characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals. The results show that co-pyrolysis prolongs the decomposition process and enhances the solidification effect of heavy metals, leading to a high-quality biochar with lower heavy metal risk.

Improving the Fenton-like catalytic performance of MnOx-Fe3O4/biochar using reducing agents: A comparative study

Ling Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Fenton-like system was developed using FeMn/biochar composite and reducing agents. Among the tested reducing agents, oxalic acid and hydroxylamine showed significant enhancement in catalytic capacity of the Fenton-like process, leading to improved degradation efficiency of ciprofloxacin. The accelerated metal redox cycle in the FeMn/biochar-H2O2-HA system facilitated the decomposition of H2O2 into reactive oxygen species, which were responsible for the degradation of pollutants.

Changes in adsorption mechanisms of radioactive barium, cobalt, and strontium ions using spent coffee waste biochars via alkaline chemical activation: Enrichment effects of O-containing functional groups

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: The study found that chemically activated spent coffee waste biochars with NaOH showed higher efficiency and stronger chemical adsorption in the removal of radioactive species. The adsorption process of radioactive species in SCWB-P and SCWB-A was mainly influenced by oxygen functional groups, with physisorption dominating in SCWB-P and chemisorption playing a crucial role in SCWB-A.

Effect of boron doping on the performance of Ni/Biochar catalysts for steam reforming of toluene as a tar model compound

Xing-Bao Wang et al.

Summary: Boron doping significantly extended the lifetime of Ni/BC catalysts by interacting with Ni and biochar support simultaneously. It reduced the gasification consumption rate of the biochar support by transforming K into more stable borates, inhibiting the desorption of CO and CO2, and forming B2O3 as an active site blocker. Additionally, boron doping also decreased coke deposition on the Ni particles.

A novel, efficient and sustainable magnetic sludge biochar modified by graphene oxide for environmental concentration imidacloprid removal

Yongfei Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel graphene oxide supported magnetic sludge biochar composite (GO/CoFe2O4-SBC) was synthesized and evaluated for the removal of imidacloprid (IMI) at environmental concentration level. The outstanding adsorption performance of GO/CoFe2O4-SBC was attributed to factors such as pore filling, pi-pi conjugation, and functional groups interaction. The composite showed high sustainable adsorption capacity, easy separability, and environmental security with low leaching concentrations of Fe and Co.

Reduction and removal of As(V) in aqueous solution by biochar derived from nano zero-valent-iron (nZVI) and sewage sludge

Liheng Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar prepared by co-pyrolysis of nano-zero-valent iron and sewage sludge (nZVISB) showed a removal efficiency of over 99% for As(V) from aqueous solution, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 60.61 mg g(-1) following the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the removal of As(V) was a spontaneous and endothermic process driven by chemical adsorption.

Adsorption of radioactive strontium by pristine and magnetic biochars derived from spent coffee grounds

Jaegwan Shin et al.

Summary: The FeCl3 pretreatment effectively magnetized the pristine SCG biochars, significantly increasing their specific surface area and total pore volume. However, it did not significantly improve the adsorption efficiency of Sr2+. The adsorption process was mainly controlled by monolayer adsorption, indicating that the FeCl3-pretreated SCG biochars could be recovered effectively through magnetic separation.
