Microscopic molecular insights into clathrate methane hydrates dissociation in a flowing system

Bo Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of drilling fluid on hydrate stability under different intrusion velocities were investigated through molecular dynamics simulation. It was found that hydrate nuclei on hydrophilic surfaces are more susceptible to temperature, and higher fluid velocity leads to greater degree of hydrate dissociation, with faster decomposition in the vertical flow direction compared to the parallel flow direction.

Experimental and molecular dynamics studies of zwitterionic inhibitors of methane hydrate dissociation

Zihua Shao et al.

Summary: A new type of hydrate dissociation inhibitor was studied using both experimental and molecular dynamics methods. The experimental results showed that this zwitterionic compound had an inhibitory effect on hydrate dissociation, and a kinetic model was validated using the experimental data. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the charged functional groups improved the interaction between the inhibitor and methane hydrate, and the sulfonate group had a strong hydration ability that affected the distribution of water molecules in the water phase.

Integration of hydrogen bonding interaction and Schiff-base chemistry toward self-healing, anti-freezing, and conductive elastomer

Chuanwei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a class of elastomers with self-healing, anti-freezing, and conductive properties was prepared based on polymerizable deep eutectic solvents (PDES) through multiple hydrogen bonding and Schiff-base chemistry. The elastomers exhibited improved mechanical properties and excellent self-healing efficiency of 92.1% with a dynamic dual-crosslinked network. The conductive elastomers also showed anti-freezing capabilities and flexibility at -50 degrees C, making them promising for applications in strain sensors and wearable devices.

Tuning the fluid production behaviour of hydrate-bearing sediments by multi-stage depressurization

Qiang Gao et al.

Summary: Natural gas hydrates are high-energy-density and clean energy source with great potential for producing methane. Multi-stage depressurization processes have been investigated for dissociating water-saturated hydrate-bearing sediments, showing that increasing the number of stages and refinements can control hydrate dissociation rate and significantly reduce cumulative fluid production in each stage. Different mechanisms, driven by heat transfer and pressure drawdown, affect the fluid production behavior, with increasing number of stages leading to improvements in minimum temperature and energy efficiency ratio.

Microstructural and hydration resistance study of CaO with powder surface modification by Al coupling agents: Alkoxy type and phosphate type

Shaokun Liu et al.

Summary: The surface of Ca(OH)(2) powders were pre-treated with alkoxy type aluminium coupling agent (ALC) and phosphate type aluminium phosphorus coupling agent (ALPC), respectively in this work. Both ALC and ALPC could conspicuously enhance the hydration resistance of CaO specimens by modifying surface microstructures in different ways. The results indicated that ALC was more effective in improving hydration resistance of CaO materials.

Numerical Evaluation of Gas Hydrate Production Performance of the Depressurization and Backfilling with an In Situ Supplemental Heat Method

Tao Xu et al.

Summary: A novel method of depressurization and backfilling with in situ supplemental heat has been proposed to enhance gas production in methane hydrate reservoirs. Numerical simulations show that stimulated fractures and CaO injection can effectively enhance pressure drop effects and provide in situ heat. Sensitivity analysis reveals the existence of a threshold fracture permeability for increasing gas production, with gas production increasing with smaller permeabilities and larger CaO injections. Overall, this work theoretically quantifies the potential value of this method for marine gas hydrate recovery.
