Anaerobic co-digestion of cheese whey and septage: Effect of substrate and inoculum on biogas production

K. Bella et al.

Summary: The study investigated the improvement of anaerobic digestion of cheese whey waste and found that septage is an excellent co-substrate. The highest biogas production was achieved with cattle manure inoculated mixture at 60% whey fraction.

Advancing anaerobic digestion of sugarcane vinasse: Current development, struggles and future trends on production and end-uses of biogas in Brazil

Antonio Djalma Nunes Ferraz Junior et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a versatile technology that can produce biogas for various energy demands. Brazil has great potential for biogas production, but currently only a small percentage is utilized. This article reviews the technologies for biogas production and utilization in the context of sugarcane biorefineries. The study found that connecting steam boilers to electricity generators can achieve high thermal efficiency, and a portion of vinasse can meet the diesel consumption of agricultural operations. The aim of this review is to strengthen the research on biogas systems to align with the expansion and diversification of the Brazilian energy matrix.

Summary: This research explores the possibility of modifying the X8 Skywalker from a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle into a convertiplane. Computational fluid dynamics and wind tunnel experiments were conducted to analyze the performance of different wing configurations. The results indicate that the proposed modifications can generate enough lift despite reducing the wing area, with the filleted hole configuration demonstrating less drag and turbulence effects at low angles of attack.

Hacking biofilm developed in a structured-bed reactor (SBRRIA) with integrated processes of nitrogen and organic matter removal

Carla Eloisa Diniz dos Santos et al.

Summary: The microbial community in a structured-bed reactor was able to adapt to different organic and nitrogen loads and shift according to changes in the C/N ratio, with no impact on reactor performance in terms of COD and Total-N removal. Under different C/N ratios, different bacterial families prevailed, including those capable of using organic matter, ammonia oxidizers, aerobic denitrifiers, and Anammox bacteria. The stratification of aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic zones enabled the establishment of various nitrogen degradation pathways within the reactor.

Reactor start-up strategy as key for high and stable hydrogen production from cheese whey thermophilic dark fermentation

Giovanna Lovato et al.

Summary: The study evaluated three different start-up strategies for hydrogen production from thermophilic dark fermentation, with strategy (iii) increasing hydrogen productivity by 39% compared to the others. The combination of high temperature and low pH favored hydrogen-producing routes, potentially boosted by synergy between different bacteria. A total of three 41 m(3) reactors would be needed to treat 3.4 x 10(3) m(3) year(-1) of whey in small-size dairy industry, with the energy produced reaching 14 MWh month(-1).
