Hydro-abrasive erosion behaviors of HVOF sprayed carbide-based cermet coatings in simulated seawater slurries

Sheng Hong et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the hydro-abrasive erosion behaviors of carbide-based cermet coatings sprayed by high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) in simulated seawater slurries. The WC-Ni coating exhibits worse corrosion resistance but superior hydro-abrasive erosion resistance compared to the Cr3C2-NiCr coating. The hydro-abrasive erosion resistance of the WC-Ni coating is less affected by flow velocity and sand concentration, while the Cr3C2-NiCr coating is highly influenced by these factors. Higher flow velocity and sand concentration both contribute to the degradation of the coatings' hydro-abrasive erosion resistance, with flow velocity having a greater effect.

Hydro-abrasive erosion and cavitation-silt erosion characteristics of HVOF sprayed WC-Ni cermet coatings under different flow velocities and sand concentrations

Sheng Hong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the responses of a high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) sprayed WC-10Ni coating to hydro-abrasive erosion (HAE) and cavitation-silt erosion (CSE) in different multiphase flow conditions. The results show that the WC-10Ni coating has higher resistance to HAE and CSE compared to 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel. Increasing flow velocity and sand concentration intensify the degradation of both the WC-10Ni coating and 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel. Cavitation erosion is a significant factor influencing material degradation in relation to flow velocity and sand concentration. The HAE process of the WC-10Ni coating involves the pull-out of hard phase grains, micro-cutting and scoring of the soft binder matrix, and the fracturing of hard phase grains. With higher flow velocity and sand concentration, the WC-10Ni coating experiences the CSE process of erosion pits, scoring of the soft binder matrix, fracturing of hard phase grains, crater formation, coating spalling, and isolation of hard phase grains.

Thermally induced microstructure evolution and effects on the corrosion behaviors of AlFeSi metallic glass coatings

Yunyun Ge et al.

Summary: The effects of devitrification on microstructure evolution and corrosion resistance of arc-sprayed AlFeSi metallic glass coatings were investigated. The results showed that different annealing temperatures led to the formation of new phases and influenced the crystalline size of the coatings. Electrochemical tests revealed that devitrification increased the current density and decreased the impedance of the coatings. The as-sprayed coating exhibited the best corrosion resistance, while decreased amorphous fraction and crystal structure heterogeneity in the annealed coatings contributed to the degradation of corrosion resistance.

Deformation-induced martensite in 304 stainless steel during cavitation erosion: Effect on passive film stability and the interaction between cavitation erosion and corrosion

Z. X. Li et al.

Summary: The research investigated the effect of deformation-induced martensite on the corrosion behavior and the interaction between cavitation erosion (CE) and corrosion of 304 stainless steel (SS). It was found that the content of deformation-induced martensite showed a negative correlation with the pitting potential, while the corrosion current density and the carrier density increased with the prolongation of CE time, indicating a decreased stability of passive films. The results showed that deformation-induced martensite mainly affected the pure CE mechanical damage and that corrosion accelerated the material damage by reducing resistance to pitting and accelerating the formation and propagation of cracks around corrosion pits.

Summary: In this study, WC-Ni coatings were prepared using cold spraying and laser surface melting, forming a three-dimensional WC skeleton structure with uniform distribution. The remelted coatings with WC skeleton exhibited remarkable resistance against cavitation erosion by preventing crack propagation. The enhanced cavitation erosion resistance was attributed to the synergistic effect of the Ni binder phase and the hard WC phase.
