Residual stress evolution enhanced martensite phase transition and texture development in cryogenic-tempered WC-Co ultra-coarse grained cemented carbide

Tao Hua et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of residual stress on the microstructure, martensite phase transition, texture development, and mechanical properties enhancement in cryogenic tempered WC-6wt.%Co ultra-coarse grained cemented carbides. The results showed that the residual stress increase and temperature decrease both affect the martensite phase transition, and the occurrence of martensite phase transition during tempering is highly related to the residual stress evolution. The preferred orientation of WC phase is concentrated due to the evolution of residual stress, which leads to an increase in hardness and transverse rupture strength.

Effect of C content on microstructure and mechanical properties of Cr-based hard composites obtained by different sintering methods

Xiangxing Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different C contents and sintering methods on the densification, grain size, phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Cr-based-WC hardmetals. The results show that spark plasma sintering is the superior processing method, producing fully dense samples at lower temperatures and shorter times. The C content plays a key role in determining the microstructure and phase formation, with higher C contents leading to the formation of different carbide phases.

Effects of residual thermal stress on mechanical behavior of cermets with different grain sizes

Jinghong Chen et al.

Summary: The distribution of residual thermal stress in cermets and its interaction with applied stress were studied in WC-Co cemented carbides. The study found that WC grain size significantly influences the residual thermal stress, with smaller grain size, lower Co thin-layer proportion, and higher triple junction proportion beneficial for reducing stress concentration. In cermets with residual thermal stress, the metallic binder shows an increasing strain response rate under external loading, providing insights into adjusting stress distribution for improved mechanical properties.
