Effect of plasma nitriding ion current density on tribological properties of composite CrAlN coatings

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, CrAlN coatings were synthesized on pre-plasma nitrided M2 high speed steels using different ion current densities. The research showed that higher ion current density could enhance nitriding efficiency significantly. Nitrided layers without compound layer or grain boundary precipitation were produced with all experimental ion current densities.

Modification and verification of Miedema model for predicating thermodynamic properties of binary precipitates in multi-element alloys

Cai Li et al.

Summary: "In this paper, a new atomic size factor is introduced to modify the Miedema model, improving the calculation accuracy. The modified Miedema model is verified by recalculating the formation enthalpies of different alloys, predicting the precipitation temperature of a specific phase in a ternary alloy, and analyzing the precipitation of binary phases in a quaternary alloy. The results show that the modified model is accurate and reasonable."

A functionally graded coating from ZrN to Ti: Experimental characterization, erosion behavior and design concept

Jinwei Yi et al.

Summary: In functionally graded coatings (FGCs), the elemental composition or structure gradually changes as a function of depth, allowing for a gradual transition of properties. A sandwich-like ZrN/Ti FGC, fabricated using the double glow plasma alloying (DGPA) technique, demonstrated high adhesion and erosion resistance due to a transition layer derived from atom diffusion. The coexistence of metal and ceramic phases in the transition layer deflected radial crack propagation and increased plastic work consumption. Thermodynamic calculations showed that controlling the diffusion thickness of Zr over N can improve the phase content of ZrN and reduce the prevalence of unfavorable TiN and Ti2N phases.

Tribomechanical and microstructural properties of cathodic arc-deposited ternary nitride coatings

Esad Kaya et al.

Summary: In this study, TiN, TiAlN, CrAlN, and TiSiN ceramic-based thin film coatings were deposited on non-toxic and cobalt-free powder metallurgy-sintered carbide samples by cathodic arc physical vapor deposition. The ternary nitride thin film coatings exhibited better mechanical performance than TiN coating, with TiSiN showing improved mechanical and tribological properties compared to other coatings.

Laser surface alloying of FeCoCrAlNiTi high entropy alloy composite coatings reinforced with TiC on 304 stainless steel to enhance wear behavior

C. L. Wu et al.

Summary: FECoCrAlNiTi + x%TiC (x = 10 and 30) high entropy alloy (HEA) composite coatings were deposited using laser surface alloying to study the effect of TiC addition on wear resistance. The results showed that the addition of TiC significantly increased the hardness and wear resistance of the HEA composite coatings, and TiC particles refined the grains of the HEA matrix. The HEA composite coatings in this study exhibited superior wear performance compared to the monotonous HEA coating reported previously.

Effect of shot peening pretreatment on the high-temperature tribological behaviours of a TaN coating prepared via double-cathode glow plasma alloying

Haiyang Yu et al.

Summary: This study focused on preparing a TaN gradient-modified layer on TA15 titanium alloy by RASP, which refined crystal sizes to the nanometer scale and facilitated adsorption and inward diffusion of Ta and N atoms. The pretreated TaN-modified layer demonstrated good wear resistance in ball-on-disc testing at 700 K, with a significantly reduced wear rate compared to untreated samples.
