Degradable or not? Cellulose acetate as a model for complicated interplay between structure, environment and degradation

Nisha Yadav et al.

Summary: Biodegradable and/or biobased plastics are seen as potential solutions to the plastic waste problem, but achieving complete degradation in natural environments remains challenging, with the interactions between chemical structure, composition, and degradation environment playing a crucial role.

Opaque and translucent films from aqueous microfiber suspensions by evaporative self-assembly

Mehr Negar Mirvakili et al.

Summary: By casting MF suspensions on hydrophobic and hydrophilic substrates under controlled conditions, opaque films were found to form on the hydrophilic surface, while translucent films formed on the hydrophobic one. The physical and mechanical properties of MF films were comparable to those of nano-fibrillated cellulose and microfibrillated cellulose films. The observations from MF film formation on substrates of different wettability are discussed in relation to water evaporation from sessile droplets containing nanoparticles.

Iso- and Anisotropic Etching of Micro Nanofibrillated Cellulose Films by Sequential Oxygen and Nitrogen Gas Plasma Exposure for Tunable Wettability on Crystalline and Amorphous Regions

Katarina Dimic-Misic et al.

Summary: The cellulose films obtained from refined pulp with different enzymatic pretreatment digestion times were exposed to gas plasma, resulting in surface chemical and morphological changes affecting mechanical and surface properties. Single and dual exposure to oxygen and nitrogen plasma showed differing effects on the roughness, nanostructural and chemical changes, and wettability of the cellulose film. Oxygen plasma induced greater morphological change, while nitrogen plasma contributed more to chemical modification of the film surface.

Skin and bubble formation in films made of methyl nanocellulose, hydrophobically modified ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose and microfibrillated cellulose

Johanna Lyytikainen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the film-forming behavior and properties of thin films prepared from nanocellulose and cellulose derivatives under different drying temperatures. The results revealed differences in interactions and associations between EHEC, MFC, and methyl nanocellulose, and showed that increasing the amount of MFC could improve the oxygen barrier properties of the films.
