Lignocellulosic Materials for the Production of Biofuels, Biochemicals and Biomaterials and Applications of Lignocellulose-Based Polyurethanes: A Review

Antonio M. Borrero-Lopez et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest techniques and procedures for treating and modifying lignocellulosic materials to be used as precursors for biomaterials, biochemicals, and biofuels, with a focus on lignin and lignin-based products. Four main pretreatment types, including thermal, mechanical, chemical, and biological, are discussed, with particular attention given to the biological action of fungi and bacteria. The review highlights the vast possibilities of obtaining different final products depending on the selected microorganism and biomass. It extensively describes biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials derived from lignocellulose, covering not only the whole lignocellulosic structure but also the main biopolymers, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Moreover, the formulation of bio-polyurethanes from lignocellulosic materials is emphasized, especially in their applications in lubricant, adhesive, and cushioning material fields. The review also presents high-performance alternatives to petroleum-derived products such as adhesives, lubricating greases, and elastomers with improved properties.

Summary: By blending softwood Kraft lignin with polyamidoamine dendritic polymer, bead-free nanofiber mats were successfully produced for the first time, showing enhanced mechanical and thermal characteristics. The chemical interactions between lignin functional groups and amino groups in PAMAM were verified, suggesting potential applications in membranes, filtration, and controlled release drug delivery.

Effect of lignin structure in different biomass resources on the performance of lignin-based carbon nanofibers as supercapacitor electrode

Boyu Du et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of different types of lignin from hardwood, softwood, and grass as raw materials for fabricating lignin-based carbon nanofibers (LCNFs). The results showed that LCNFs prepared with poplar lignin exhibited higher tensile strength, specific surface area, specific capacitance, energy density, and cycling stability. Various characterization analyses suggested that the lignin's chemical structure played a crucial role in determining the properties of LCNFs.

Electrospun lignin-PVP nanofibers and their ability for structuring oil

Maria Borrego et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrospinnability of low-sulfonate Kraft lignin and polyvinylpyrrolidone solutions in N,N-dimethylformamide and their application in structuring castor oil. Different nano structures are generated based on the rheological properties of the solution, leading to the formation of oleogels with tailored rheological properties. These oleogels, serving as bio-based lubricants, exhibit satisfactory friction and wear performance.

Thickening Castor Oil with a Lignin-Enriched Fraction from Sugarcane Bagasse Waste via Epoxidation: A Rheological and Hydrodynamic Approach

Esperanza Cortes-Trivino et al.

Summary: The study investigated the viscous flow properties of epoxidized castor oil by adjusting the epoxidation degree through altering reaction conditions, and modified the rheological properties with a lignin-enriched fraction from sugarcane bagasse waste. Oil thickening was achieved by promoting cross-linking between the epoxidized oil and lignin-enriched fraction, resulting in various rheological responses from Newtonian liquids to viscoelastic liquids.

Lignin-Based Additives for Improved Thermo-Oxidative Stability of Biolubricants

Monika A. Jedrzejczyk et al.

Summary: Biobased lubricants, such as vegetable oils, are environmentally friendly alternatives to petroleum-based lubricants, but their lack of thermo-oxidative stability limits their applications. This study demonstrates the successful incorporation of lignin-based antioxidants in biolubricant formulations, improving their thermo-oxidative stability and lubricating properties.
