Simultaneous microwave-assisted phosphotungstic acid catalysis for rapid improvements on the accessibility and reactivity of Kraft-based dissolving pulp

Chao Duan et al.

Summary: In this study, a simultaneous microwave-assisted phosphotungstic acid (PTA) catalysis strategy was developed to improve the cellulose accessibility and reactivity in the dissolving pulp manufacturing. The MW-PTAsim treatment showed superior results compared to single MW treatment and sequential MW-PTAseq treatment in terms of reactivity and viscosity improvement.

Ultrafast process of microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent to improve properties of bamboo dissolving pulp

Chao Duan et al.

Summary: In this work, an ultrafast microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (MW-DES) process was proposed for viscosity control and reactivity enhancement in the production of high-quality cellulose products. The MW-DES process achieved simultaneous fiber swelling and cellulose depolymerization, resulting in a significant decrease in pulp viscosity and increase in reactivity. The DES used in the process showed high reusability and chemical stability, providing a simple, sustainable, and effective alternative for upgrading dissolving pulp from non-wood materials such as bamboo.

Separation cellulose nanocrystals from microcrystalline cellulose using hydrated deep eutectic solvent and high shear force

Haiqiao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposed and evaluated a method for preparing cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by combining chemical hydrated deep eutectic solvent (DES) with mechanical high shear force methods. The method showed increased CNC yields with similar crystal structure as MCC, and is more environmentally friendly and faster compared to conventional methods.

Sustainable Multiscale High-Haze Transparent Cellulose Fiber Film via a Biomimetic Approach

Qing-Fang Guan et al.

Summary: Inspired by biomaterials and Xuan paper, researchers have developed an ultrastrong and ultraflexible transparent cellulose fiber film with an ultrafine nano- and microscale structure. The film combines high strength, toughness, low thermal expansion coefficients, high light transmittance, and high haze simultaneously. It can also be restored to intactness after folding and rolling, making it a promising alternative film material for flexible electronic devices.

Effect of Enzymatic Depolymerization of Cellulose and Hemicelluloses on the Direct Dissolution of Prehydrolysis Kraft Dissolving Pulp

Sara Ceccherini et al.

Summary: The study compares the dissolution kinetics of hardwood and softwood PHK pulps before and after high-solid-content mechano-enzymatic treatments. Enzyme treatments significantly reduced the dissolution time of both pulps, with xylanase and mannanase affecting only the hemicellulose content of hardwood. Hornification, exacerbated by hemicellulose degradation, partially hindered the shortening of dissolution time.

Production of rayon fibres from cellulosic pulps: State of the art and current developments

Ines S. F. Mendes et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for cellulosic fibers is driven by the growing global population and the textile industry, as the annual cotton production is no longer sufficient to meet market demands. Regenerated cellulosic fibers produced from dissolving pulp are progressively filling the market gap, with new trends focusing on environmentally friendly production. Alternative processes involving direct dissolution of cellulose in recyclable solvents are emerging, leading to high quality rayon fibers.

A rapid, green method for the preparation of cellulosic self-reinforcing composites from wood and bamboo pulp

Yucheng Hu et al.

Summary: Utilizing a new green aqueous solvent, cellulosic self-reinforcing composites (CSRCs) were rapidly obtained by partially dissolving wood and bamboo pulp at 8 degrees C. The solvent system was found to hinder the self-reinforcing process by affecting lignin and degree of polymerization. Characterization through various methods revealed cellulose I was partially replaced by cellulose II, leading to a significant increase in tensile strength.
