A Review on Polymer Precursors of Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes for Olefin/Paraffin Separation

Seong-Joong Kim et al.

Summary: CMS membranes are developed to replace or support energy-intensive cryogenic distillation for olefin/paraffin separation. Different polymer precursors lead to varying structures and performances of CMS membranes for olefin/paraffin separation. The effects of incorporating inorganic materials into polymer precursors and the pyrolysis process on the properties of CMS membranes are reviewed, along with prospects and future directions for olefin/paraffin separation using CMS membranes and aging issues.

Carbon molecular sieve membranes derived from crosslinkable polyimides for CO2/CH4 and C2H4/C2H6 separations

Qixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes fabricated using carboxylated polyimides exhibited enhanced gas separation performance, particularly in CO2 and olefin separation. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature of polyimides can improve membrane selectivity but reduce permeability, while Zn2+ functionalization can further enhance gas selectivity. These materials have great potential for industrial applications such as CO2 separation and olefin recovery, surpassing Robeson's upper-bound for gas separation.

Carbon molecular sieve membrane with tunable microstructure for CO2 separation: Effect of multiscale structures of polyimide precursors

Mengjie Hou et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes were fabricated by designing polyimides with different diamine moieties to investigate the impact of multiscale structures of precursors on the microstructure and CO2 separation performance. The results indicated that the multiscale structures of polyimides significantly influenced the microstructure and CO2 separation performance of the derived CMS membranes. The CMS membranes prepared from high FFV polyimide with helical chain conformation showed looser carbon structures that were beneficial for CO2 transport, suggesting attractive application prospects for CO2 separation.

Thermal crosslinking membrane with enhanced CO2 separation performance derived from nitrile-containing phenolphthalein-based poly (arylene ether ketone)

Ruisong Xu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel and commercial polymer, PEK-C(CN), for the preparation of thermal crosslinking membranes, achieving high permeability selectivity which offers a promising alternative in CO2 capture and separation for industrial applications. The incorporation of nitrile groups during the preparation process, which undergo thermal cyclotrimerization reaction, contributes to the preparation of highly permeable thermal crosslinking membranes, demonstrating potential applications in CO2 capture and separation.

Tailoring pore structure and surface chemistry of microporous Alumina-Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes (Al-CMSMs) by altering carbonization temperature for optimal gas separation performance: An investigation using low-field NMR relaxation measurements

Luke Forster et al.

Summary: The carbonization temperature of Al-CMSM significantly affects pore size, hydrophilicity, permeance, and permselectivity. Lower carbonization temperatures produce more hydrophilic membranes with higher water permeance. Water permeance is higher than CH4 permeance due to the larger kinetic diameter of CH4 and the enhanced adsorption-diffusion transport mechanism in hydrophilic pores.

Self-assembled Facilitated Transport Membranes with Tunable carrier Distribution for ethylene/ethane Separation

Haozhen Dou et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to constructing facilitated transport membranes (FTMs) with tunable carrier distribution for highly efficient sub-angstrom scale ethylene/ethane separation. By optimizing the ion/molecule compositions within the membrane, the formation of successive carrier wires and 3D interconnected ethylene transport pathways is achieved, resulting in super-high selectivity, excellent ethylene permeance, and robust long-term stability.

Key Features of Polyimide-Derived Carbon Molecular Sieves

Wulin Qiu et al.

Summary: Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes have impressive separation properties, and this study characterizes CMS with the simplest polyimide (PI) PMDA/pPDA to better understand the chemical and morphology structures. Comparisons were made with a CMS derived from a more conventional PI precursor, revealing the presence of various components in both types of CMS. The morphologies of CMS show similarities consistent with distributed molecular sieving plate-like structures, aiding in understanding the diverse CMS membrane separation performance.
