Nanoporous polymer-derived activated carbon for hydrogen adsorption and electrochemical energy storage

Nikolaos Kostoglou et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential applications of a nanoporous polymer-/polyaniline-derived activated carbon (PDAC) in hydrogen storage and supercapacitor energy storage. The PDAC demonstrates superior hydrogen adsorption performance and supercapacitor cell performance compared to conventional commercial activated carbon, attributed to the smaller pore sizes of the PDAC structure.

Copper-doped activated carbon from amorphous cellulose for hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide storage

Giuseppe Conte et al.

Summary: The transition to a carbon-neutral energy sector requires the development of new storage materials for hydrogen and methane as well as new solutions for carbon capture and storage. Activated carbons, with their high specific surface area and other favorable properties, are considered promising adsorbents for these purposes. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of activated carbons starting from amorphous cellulose, with and without the inclusion of copper nanoparticles, and investigates the effects of different nanoparticle concentrations on porosity and gas storage properties.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from alcohol aqueous solutions over TiO2-activated carbon composites decorated with Au and Pt

Jaroslaw Serafin et al.

Summary: Nanocomposites based on titanium dioxide loaded with metal nanoparticles (Au and Pt) and activated carbon were synthesized and tested for hydrogen photogeneration in the gas phase. The influence of the metal, the ratio of titanium oxide to active carbon, and the type of alcohol used in the reaction mixture on hydrogen photoproduction were investigated. The highest hydrogen photoproduction rate was obtained on the photocatalyst containing a weight ratio of 1:1 of activated carbon:TiO2 and loaded with 1 wt% Pt.

3D-printed activated carbon for post-combustion CO2 capture

Lucas F. A. S. Zafanelli et al.

Summary: The applicability of 3D-printed activated carbons for CO2 capture in post-combustion streams and the influence of activation conditions on CO2 uptake and CO2/N2 selectivity were studied. The results showed that higher burnoff during activation increased the adsorption capacity of CO2 and N2, while lower burnoff led to higher selectivity of CO2 over N2. The study also proposed modeling approaches for describing single and multicomponent adsorption equilibrium, and demonstrated the working capacity and stability of the carbon.

Valorization of spent disposable wooden chopstick as the CO2 adsorbent for a CO2/H2 mixed gas purification

Wanida Koo-amornpattana et al.

Summary: A series of activated carbons derived from spent disposable wooden chopsticks were used to separate carbon dioxide (CO2) from a CO2/hydrogen (H-2) mixed gas. The activation temperature had a significant impact on the yield and CO2 adsorption capacity of the activated carbons. The optimal conditions resulted in a yield of 23.18% and a CO2 adsorption capacity of 85.19 mg/g. High purity hydrogen (>96.8 mol%) can be obtained from a low CO2 concentration gas, and around 90 mol% from a high CO2 concentration gas.
