Preparation and ion separation properties of sub-nanoporous PES membrane with high chemical resistance

Shuhang Wu et al.

Summary: A study presents a green and convenient method to prepare sub-nanoporous PES membrane with highly aligned channels, which can be facilely regulated at subnanoscale by adjusting membrane's UV sensitization time for tailor-made membrane design. The membrane exhibits excellent ion-exchange performance in electrodialysis ion separation, with high separation ratio and transport rate. The strong chemical and electrochemical tolerances of the sub-nanoporous PES membrane are essential for future applications.

Ionic Transport and Sieving Properties of Sub-nanoporous Polymer Membranes with Tunable Channel Size

Yaxiong Cheng et al.

Summary: A convenient method is reported to introduce ionic selective channels in micron-thick polycarbonate membranes through swift heavy ion irradiation, UV sensitization, and pulsed-electrical etching, tuning the characteristic dimensions of the channels for subnanoporous membranes with excellent ionic separation and sieving properties. The study found that the transmembrane conduction of multivalent ions was suppressed compared to monovalent ions until the size of the membrane channel matched the hydrated diameter of multivalent ions, showing high selectivity for various ions and channel diameters.

Selectivity of ion transport in narrow carbon nanotubes depends on the driving force due to drag or drive nature of their active hydration shells

Haiqi Gao et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations have shown the significant influence of hydration shells on ions passing through ultrathin carbon nanotubes. Electrically-driven ions tend to drag their hydration shells, while pressure-driven ions can be actively driven by their hydration shells. The different binding strengths of hydration shells to ions of various sizes affect the entry rates and driving speeds of ions in CNTs.

2D Heterostructured Nanofluidic Channels for Enhanced Desalination Performance of Graphene Oxide Membranes

Yuying Wu et al.

Summary: Adding g-C3N4 sheets into GO membranes to establish stable and sub-nanometer wide channels can significantly improve salt rejection and water permeance. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that size exclusion is the main mechanism for high rejections, while the ultra-low friction water flow along g-C3N4 sheets enhances permeation. Additionally, the GO/g-C3N4 membrane exhibits promising long-term, antioxidation, and antipressure stability.

Scale Effect on Simple Liquid Transport through a Nanoporous Graphene Membrane

Jaber Al Hossain et al.

Summary: The transport mechanism of a simple liquid through nanoporous graphene membranes was explored using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. The pore diameter affects the local density peak near the membrane and the pressure drop, as well as the velocity profile inside the nanopore. By implementing different boundary approaches and local nanoscale variants, an optimized pore boundary definition was found.
