MXene-incorporated 1D/2D nano-carbons for electromagnetic shielding: A review

For lightweight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding in portable electronics, materials with high mechanical strength and excellent shielding efficiency are required. MXenes incorporated into carbon-based materials show efficient EMI shielding and strong mechanical properties. This review summarizes recent advances in MXene incorporated carbon-based EMI shielding materials and discusses the influence of morphological factors.
Lightweight electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials for portable and highly compacted electronics are required to have robust mechanical strength as well as excellent shielding efficiency. In the recent years, although 1D/2D nano carbons and 2D MXenes have been explored as electromagnetic shield in place of highly conductive yet dense and corrosion-susceptible metals, individual MXenes or carbon-based materials do not meet the prerequisites for real application. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the composites of carbon-based materials including 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene, coupled with conductive 2D MXenes for electromagnetic shielding. The MXenes incorporated 1D/2D carbon-based material composites exhibit efficient EMI shielding effectiveness along with excellent mechanical properties, arising from the constituents, respectively. The role of morphological factors such as thin films, foams, and segregated structures in enhancing the electromagnetic shielding is elucidated in detail. This article reviews the recent advances in the MXene incorporated carbon-based EMI shielding materials with strong mechanical properties and provides guidelines to ensure their practical viability for real applications in advanced electronics.
