Bacterial cellulose nanofibrils-reinforced composite hydrogels for mechanical compression-responsive on-demand drug release

Daehwan Park et al.

Summary: The study introduces a cellulose-reinforced hybrid hydrogel system that enhances mechanical strength and enables on-demand drug release. By incorporating bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNFs) into a polyacrylamide (PAM) mesh, the compression strength of the hydrogel was significantly increased. Additionally, the tailored composition of BCNFs with PAM allowed for delayed drug release compared to PAM alone while enabling drug release in response to mechanical stress.

Bio-Inspired Lotus-Fiber-like Spiral Hydrogel Bacterial Cellulose Fibers

Qing-Fang Guan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a bio-inspired hydrogel fiber with high strength, high stretchability, and high energy dissipation, named biomimetic hydrogel fiber (BHF). The spiral-like structure and breaking-reforming nature of the hydrogen bonding network among cellulose nanofibers endow BHF with outstanding properties for potential use in biomedicine. With its porous structure, high hydrophilicity, and excellent biocompatibility, BHF shows promise as an ideal surgical suture for protecting wounds.

Bio-based poly (γ-glutamic acid) hydrogels reinforced with bacterial cellulose nanofibers exhibiting superior mechanical properties and cytocompatibility

Chunyan Dou et al.

Summary: The gamma-PGA/BC composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties were constructed by introducing bacterial cellulose, showing improved strength and toughness compared to single network hydrogels. The addition of BC also enhanced the compressive fracture strength and tensile strength of the composite hydrogels, leading to good cytocompatibility for potential biomaterial applications.

Controlled production of soft magnetic hydrogel beads by biosynthesis of bacterial cellulose

Jaehwan Kim et al.

Summary: The study describes a simple process to create soft spherical ferrogels by biosynthesizing bacterial cellulose, incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into the hydrogel structure. The core ferrogel is formed by Gluconacetobacter xylinus in culture medium, while a BC shell is produced at the surface. The size of the spherical BC ferrogels can be controlled by external magnetic force, CNF, and MNP concentrations, forming a unique core-shell structure.
