Materials-driven fibronectin assembly on nanoscale topography enhances mesenchymal stem cell adhesion, protecting cells from bacterial virulence factors and preventing biofilm formation

Laila A. Damiati et al.

Summary: This study developed a polymer coating with nano-topographical structure to support osteospecific stem cells and prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. The experimental results showed that this coating can increase cell adhesion and osteoblast differentiation, and reduce biofilm formation.

Simultaneous toughening and strengthening of chitin-based composites via tensile-induced orientation and hydrogen bond reconstruction

Yu Shi et al.

Summary: A chitin nanowhiskers/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite film with high strength and toughness is successfully fabricated using a tensile-induced orientation and hydrogen bond reconstruction strategy. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite film significantly increase after stretching and hydrogen bond reconstruction. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms are attributed to the effects of intra-layer orientation and interlayer sliding.

Self-Assembly of All-DNA Rods with Controlled Patchiness

Katarina Gvozden et al.

Summary: Stiff DNA fragments can self-assemble into various smectic mesophases in concentrated aqueous solutions by selectively screening blunt-end DNA stacking interactions. The strength of attractions can be controlled to stabilize different phases, demonstrating the potential for precise tuning of DNA blunt-ends as monovalent attractive patches in the assembly of nonconventional DNA-based liquid crystal phases.

Dual-Cross-linked Liquid Crystal Hydrogels with Controllable Viscoelasticity for Regulating Cell Behaviors

Shengyue Tang et al.

Summary: The liquid crystal properties and viscoelasticity of the natural bone extracellular matrix (ECM) can guide cell behavior and regulate mineralization. In this study, a novel polysaccharide hydrogel with liquid crystal properties and viscoelasticity similar to those of natural bone ECM was prepared using a facile approach. This dual-cross-linked hydrogel showed enhanced modulus, viscoelasticity, and surface morphology, making it more favorable for the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. The findings of this study have potential applications in bone repair.

The Role of Surface Chemistry in the Osseointegration of PEEK Implants

Emily Buck et al.

Summary: Poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) implants with added NH2 and COOH groups on their surface can modulate macrophage responses and improve osseointegration. NH2-functionalized surfaces induce pro-inflammatory macrophage responses, while COOH-functionalized surfaces induce anti-inflammatory macrophage responses. The protein adsorption patterns on these surfaces are related to the varied inflammatory responses. NH2 surfaces inhibit the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) compared to COOH surfaces, despite promoting more mineralization in simulated body fluid solutions. In the rat tibia unicortical defects study, the bone around NH2 surfaces had thinner trabeculae and higher specific bone surface, indicating improved bone binding compared to unmodified implants. COOH surfaces only showed a trend in increasing bone binding. The results suggest that a combination of both mineral-binding and immune responses can improve osseointegration of PEEK implants.

Mechanistic insights into the adsorption and bioactivity of fibronectin on surfaces with varying chemistries by a combination of experimental strategies and molecular simulations

Lijing Hao et al.

Summary: The research findings indicate that different surface chemical properties impact the adsorption and cell behavior of Fn, resulting in varied bioactivities. SAMs-CH3 adsorb Fn via hydrophobic interactions with low bioactivity, SAMs-NH2 and SAMs-COOH efficiently adsorb Fn through multiple interactions, showing good bioactivity, while SAMs-OH, despite poor adsorption, also has some influence on the bioactivity of Fn.

Facile Method to Create Poly(D, L-lactide) Composite Membranes with Sequential Chitin Whisker Layers for Tunable Strength and Cell Adhesion

Kun Liu et al.

Summary: A strategy of layer-by-layer (LBL) electrostatic self-assembly using positively charged chitin whiskers and negatively charged maleated chitin whiskers was successfully employed to enhance and biofunctionalize PDLLA membrane. The incorporation of polydopamine as an intermediate layer significantly improved the stability and adhesion of the chitin whisker layers on the substrate. Moreover, adjusting the number of self-assembly whisker layers allowed for highly enhanced and controllable mechanical properties of the membranes.

Viscotaxis- directed migration of mesenchymal stem cells in response to loss modulus gradient

Pallavi Uday Shirke et al.

Summary: Directed cell migration plays a crucial role in physiological and pathological conditions. In this study, a novel form of directional cellular migration termed Viscotaxis was identified, where cells migrated from high to low loss modulus. The findings highlight the importance of considering viscous modulus in stiffness-based substrates for tissue engineering, showing the significance of substrate viscoelasticity in cell mechanics.
