Differences in chemical composition and physical properties caused by industrial storage on sugarcane bagasse result in its efficient enzymatic hydrolysis

Vanessa de Oliveira Arnoldi Pellegrini et al.

Summary: Sugarcane bagasse is a promising feedstock for ethanol production, and studying the enzymatic saccharification efficiency of aged bagasse without pretreatment showed that aged bagasse had higher conversion efficiency compared to fresh bagasse. Chemical composition, physical structure, and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency analysis revealed significant impacts of storage time on bagasse enzymatic conversion efficiency.

Evaluating the Potential of Culms from Sugarcane and Energy Cane Varieties Grown in Argentina for Second-Generation Ethanol Production

Aissata Ousmane Kane et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated efficient enzymatic convertibility of sugarcane and energy cane culms in Argentina after acid and alkali pretreatment, reaching over 97% of theoretical conversion yields. The physical and chemical changes introduced by pretreatments, such as lignin removal and hemicellulose solubilization, were consistent with high crystallinity indices and crystallite sizes of pretreated culms, leading to sustainable production of renewable lignocellulosic sugars and their transformation into green chemicals and fuels.

Summary: Enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is a complex heterogeneous catalytic process for sustainable cellulosic ethanol production. The main influencing factors include biomass pretreatment and enzyme/substrate properties, which can be optimized through experimental and theoretical modeling studies. Biomass recalcitrance depends on accessible cellulose surface area and pore volume.

Unlocking the structural features for the xylobiohydrolase activity of an unusual GH11 member identified in a compost-derived consortium

Marco A. S. Kadowaki et al.

Summary: Xylan, a heteropolysaccharide, is a valuable source of sustainable chemicals and materials from renewable biomass sources. Recent studies have identified GH11 enzymes with new capabilities of releasing xylobiose from xylan, but the structural features driving this activity remain unclear. The crystal structure of MetXyn11 provides insights into the mechanism of action of this xylobiohydrolase.

Production of xylo-oligosaccharides from wheat straw using microwave assisted deep eutectic solvent pretreatment

Asli Isci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of microwave assisted deep eutectic solvent pretreatment on the solubilization of xylan and release of xylo-oligosaccharides from wheat straw. It was found that the increase in microwave energy led to linear decrease in xylan yield in the solid fraction, while the xylose monomer and oligosaccharide yields in the liquid fraction initially increased and then declined. Addition of water in deep eutectic solvent resulted in approximately 68% reduction in furfural yield.

Recent advances in the enzymatic production and applications of xylooligosaccharides

Caio Cesar de Mello Capetti et al.

Summary: The majority of lignocellulosic biomass originates from plant cell walls, which are complex structures built up mainly by cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Xylan, a major component of hemicellulose, can be efficiently degraded into XOS with various applications using enzymatic hydrolysis. Different xylanases from CAZy families can be used to cleave xylan and degrade it into short XOS with enhanced prebiotic effects for humans and animals. Recent advances in enzymatic production of XOS from lignocellulosic biomass and their potential health benefits are discussed in this review.
