Genistin modulates high-mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1) and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) in Ehrlich-ascites-carcinoma-bearing mice

Mohamed A. Saleh et al.

Summary: Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and current treatment options are often uncomfortable and ineffective. Plant-derived natural chemicals, such as flavonoids, have gained attention due to their high bioavailability, safety, few side effects, and cost-effectiveness. Flavonoids have shown promising cytotoxic anti-cancer effects and are being researched for their ability to target inflammation and apoptosis. In a laboratory study, genistin, a flavonoid compound, demonstrated good cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cell lines. In vivo studies on animals also showed that genistin reduced tumor weight, volume, and certain biochemical markers associated with cancer progression.

Post-translational modification of MALT1 and its role in B cell- and T cell-related diseases

Yi-Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: “Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1 (MALT1) is a multifunctional protein that plays important roles in immunity, inflammation, and cancer through its scaffolding and catalytic activities. Recent studies have provided insights into the physiological and pathophysiological functions of MALT1, as well as its role in B cell- and T cell-related diseases.”

Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

Phytochemicals targeting NF-κB signaling: Potential anti-cancer interventions

Akansha Chauhan et al.

Summary: Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) is a crucial regulator of signalome and plays a pivotal role in cell functions and cancer progression. Various phytochemicals have been found to modulate NF-κB signaling pathways, providing new insights for cancer-directed interventions.

Interleukin-1 and Nuclear Factor Kappa B Signaling Promote Breast Cancer Progression and Treatment Resistance

Sydney Diep et al.

Summary: IL-1 inflammatory signaling plays a crucial role in breast cancer progression and therapeutic resistance by promoting cell proliferation, stem cell expansion, angiogenesis, metastasis, regulating intracellular signaling, and allowing tumor cells to evade therapy.

Chitosan-coated nanostructured lipid carriers for transdermal delivery of tetrahydrocurcumin for breast cancer therapy

Thien Hoang Truong et al.

Summary: Chitosan-coated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) were successfully prepared as nanocarriers for transdermal delivery of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) in breast cancer treatment. The optimized THC-Ch-NLCs showed small particle size, high drug encapsulation efficiency, and sustained release behavior. In vitro experiments demonstrated the enhanced drug permeation, cellular uptake, and cytotoxicity of THC-Ch-NLCs, indicating their potential as transdermal nanocarriers for triple-negative breast cancer treatment.

Metal exposure and breast cancer among Northern Mexican women: assessment of genetic susceptibility

Brenda Gamboa-Loira et al.

Summary: This study assesses the association between metals and breast cancer (BC) and investigates whether genetic polymorphisms in CYP1A1, CYP1B1, GSTM1, and GSTT1 modify or confound this relationship. The results show that BC is negatively associated with certain metal concentrations and positively associated with others. Moreover, interactions between genetic variants and specific metals are found to impact BC. These findings suggest that exposure to individual metals and genetic characteristics may contribute to the development of BC.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation-mediated vascular toxicity of ambient fine particulate matter: contribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and osteopontin as a biomarker

Chia-Chi Ho et al.

Summary: The present study provides in vitro, animal, and human evidence supporting the importance of AhR activation for PM2.5-induced vascular toxicities and that BkF was the major contributor of AhR activation. OPN is an AhR-dependent biomarker of PM2.5-induced vascular toxicity. The AhR activation potency may be applied in the risk assessment of vascular toxicity in PAH mixtures.

CYP1A1, VEGFA and Adipokine Responses of Human Adipocytes Co-exposed to PCB126 and Hypoxia

Zeinab El Amine et al.

Summary: It has been found that hypoxia can partially inhibit the metabolic effects of PCB126 in human adipocytes, but hypoxia and PCB126 have different impacts on the secretion of leptin, interleukin-6, and IL-8, with no apparent crosstalk between the two factors.

Nicotine stimulates CYP1A1 expression in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells via AP-1, NF-KB, and AhR

Trong Thuan Ung et al.

Summary: Nicotine stimulates CYP1A1 expression through transcription factors and signaling pathways, although antioxidant compounds can inhibit nicotine-induced reactive oxygen species production and CYP1A1 expression. Inhibition of NADPH oxidase activity also affects CYP1A1 expression.

Tetrahydrocurcumin Has Similar Anti-Amyloid Properties as Curcumin: In Vitro Comparative Structure-Activity Studies

Panchanan Maiti et al.

Summary: Despite the low bioavailability of curcumin, its stable metabolite tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) was found to have similar anti-amyloid and neuroprotective properties as curcumin. THC exhibited greater binding capability and Aβ aggregation inhibition compared to other curcumin derivatives, suggesting it may have greater therapeutic efficacy in Alzheimer's disease.

Breast cancer incidence and mortality in women in China: temporal trends and projections to 2030

Shaoyuan Lei et al.

Summary: In 2015, approximately 303,600 new cases of breast cancer occurred in China, with 70,400 deaths. Urban regions had the highest incidence and mortality rates. Both the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates increased annually between 2000 and 2015, and are projected to continue rising by more than 11% until 2030. Changes in risk and demographic factors are predicted to lead to further increases in new cases and deaths by 2030.
