Comparative transcriptome and metabolome analysis of Ostrinia furnacalis female adults under UV-A exposure

Li Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the gene and metabolite expression differences in Ostrinia furnacalis under UV-A exposure, revealing the involvement of signal transduction, detoxification, stress response, immune defense, and antioxidative system in insect adaptation. The metabolomics analysis showed disturbances in amino acid, sugar, and lipid metabolism under UV-A stress.

Evaluating and Comparing the Natural Cell Structure and Dimensions of Honey Bee Comb Cells of Chinese Bee, Apis cerana cerana (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and Italian Bee, Apis mellifera ligustica (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

Shunhua Yang et al.

Summary: This study revealed unique differences in the structure and function of comb cells between Chinese bees (Apis cerana cerana) and Italian bees (A mellifera ligustica). The bees design their cells with precise engineering to increase storage capacity and create adequate growing room for their brood. The cells showed irregular diameter sizes and differentiated into worker, drone, and honey cells.

UV radiation increases mortality and decreases the antioxidant activity in a tephritid fly

Hongying Cui et al.

Summary: The study found that UV radiation has significant effects on the survival and antioxidant enzyme activities of the tephritid fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis. Exposure to UV-B and UV-C resulted in decreased egg laying, while all three UV wavelengths led to irreversible decreases in antioxidant enzyme activities. UV radiation can be harmful to non-target organisms but may also be a potential strategy for integrated pest management.
