An Optimization Methodology of Cutter-Spacing for Efficient Mechanical Breaking of Jointed Rock Mass

Kanglei Song et al.

Summary: The cutter spacing is a significant factor affecting the cutting efficiency of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This study developed a methodology for optimizing the cutter spacing to improve the cutting efficiency of jointed rock mass. Experimental results showed that the joint plane facilitates the horizontal displacement and shear crack development of the jointed rock mass. A new term, crack propagation specific energy, was proposed to determine the optimal cutter spacing based on consumed energy per unit crack length. The optimal ratio of cutter spacing to penetration depth was found to be 10.
