Prediction of individual thermal comfort based on ensemble transfer learning method using wearable and environmental sensors

Hansaem Park et al.

Summary: Thermal comfort is challenging to recognize due to variations in human and indoor space characteristics, and data collection is time-consuming and costly. This study proposed a prediction model based on ensemble transfer learning to improve accuracy and overcome limitations of insufficient data.

Thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses to up-step change transient thermal environments: A risk factor in individuals with prosthetic heart valves

Amir Omidvar et al.

Summary: This study presents a combined thermoregulatory-cardiovascular model for predicting the effect of transient thermal environments on heart rate and cardiovascular responses. The model was validated using experimental data and found to accurately predict heart rate compared to existing models. The study also investigated the impact of different temperature changes on cardiovascular responses and found that higher temperature increases heart rate. The proposed model can be used to predict individualized thermal comfort and manage cardiovascular health risks associated with heat stresses.

Comparison of wrist skin temperature with mean skin temperature calculated with Hardy and Dubois's seven-point method while sleeping

Yuxiang Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between wrist skin temperature (WST) and the thermal state of sleeping individuals. The results showed a moderate and positive correlation between WST and mean skin temperature (MST) calculated using the seven-point method. WST can differentiate different sleeping micro thermal environments and provide information on the thermal state of the human body during sleep.

A novel methodology for human thermal comfort decoding via physiological signals measurement and analysis

Silvia Angela Mansi et al.

Summary: Personal comfort models (PCM) represent the most promising paradigm for human-centric thermal comfort in buildings. Advances in wearable sensing suggest that the use of physiological data for real-time comfort measurement can be the start-up of the next generation of building design and operation with PCMs. This study presents the results from a large original experimental campaign aiming at human thermal comfort decoding via physiological signal, demonstrating the potential of physiological measurements in identifying specific thermal sensations.

A new test method for evaluating the evaporative cooling efficiency of fabrics using a dynamic sweating hot plate

Huipu Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel method for evaluating the evaporative cooling performance of fabrics in active wear. By simulating sweating and drying processes, a dynamic sweating hot plate is used to measure the latent heat absorbed by fabrics during sweat evaporation and drying. The study shows that high-wicking polyester fabrics have better evaporative cooling performance in the sweating phase, while cotton fabrics have a significant cooling effect in the drying phase.

Non-uniform distribution of clothing insulation as a behavioral adaptation strategy and its effect on predicted thermal sensation in hot and humid environments

Zahrasadat Tabaie et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of assuming whole-body uniform clothing coverage on the accuracy of standard thermal comfort models in hot and humid environments. It finds that ignoring the non-uniformity of clothing insulation distribution can lead to significant deviations in thermal sensation predictions. A new model that considers the non-uniformity of clothing coverage is proposed and evaluated against experimental data.

Comparison of Optimal Control Techniques for Building Energy Management

Javier Arroyo et al.

Summary: This paper implements and compares variations of model predictive control (MPC), reinforcement learning (RL), and reinforced model predictive control (RL-MPC) in the same optimal control problem for building energy management. The study investigates variations of the controllers' hyperparameters and their performance. The results show that model-free RL approaches perform poorly in realistic building environments, and MPC outperforms RL when a model is available.

A novel theoretical method for predicting the effects of lighting colour temperature on physiological responses and indoor thermal perception

Amir Omidvar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of lighting color on thermal perception and found that deviations from CCT 5000 K can alter thermal sensation, with the most significant effects observed at 4000 K and 6500 K CCT. Additionally, it was shown that thermal perception is more sensitive to CCT changes in warm environments. The results suggest that changing lighting color could potentially change thermal sensation, skin temperature, and wettedness.

Negin Nazarian et al.

Summary: The study introduces the use of wrist-mounted wearable devices to monitor environmental and physiological responses for thermal comfort assessments, and evaluates their feasibility through two sets of experiments. Findings show that data obtained through the wearables can predict core temperature non-invasively and demonstrate a direct connection between air temperature at the wrist and individuals' perceived activity levels.
