Influences of wind direction on the cooling effects of mountain vegetation in urban area

Dan Song et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the influences of wind direction on the cooling effects of Zijin Mountain in Nanjing. The results indicate that wind direction has significant influences on the cooling effects of mountain vegetation in urban areas, and the greater the wind speed differences, the greater the impacts. This study is helpful and meaningful for urban microclimate analyses and urban planning research.

A review of multi-scale modelling, assessment, and improvement methods of the urban thermal and wind environment

Sihong Du et al.

Summary: The urban thermal and wind environment (UTWE) is an important consideration in urban planning design, but there is a lack of method specifications and comprehensive study reviews, leading to unclear steps in assessment and improvement. The review found that scale is considered in modelling and improvement studies, but not in assessments. Contradictory conclusions were found in improvement studies, and current assessments do not directly guide the selection of improvement strategies.

The role of residential tree arrangement: A scoping review of energy efficiency in temperate to subtropical climate zones

Mina Rouhollahi et al.

Summary: A significant shift towards consolidating residential neighbourhoods has had a dramatic impact on the Australian national urban tree canopy benchmark. Previous tree planting strategies in densely settled residential suburbs are no longer sufficient for environmental and energy conservation goals. A review of original research conducted over the past two decades has led to a better understanding of the relationship between trees and the built environment. This review establishes potential tree allocation parameters for urban energy conservation within the constraints of residential landscapes.

Summary: Green wall deployment can positively impact both urban heat island effect and building energy demand. Depending on the climate zone, green walls can reduce building energy consumption, mitigate the extent of the heat island effect, and provide healthier living conditions. Further research is needed to explore other influencing factors.

The impact of urban vegetation morphology on urban building energy consumption during summer and winter seasons in Nanjing, China

Sijie Zhu et al.

Summary: It has been shown that urban vegetation can effectively reduce energy consumption in urban buildings by regulating microclimate and shading solar radiation. However, there is still a lack of understanding about the potential energy savings of vegetation morphology planning at the urban scale. This study statistically analyzed the morphology of Nanjing's metropolitan area and extracted 40 urban building-vegetation morphological prototypes. Using a co-simulation technique, the summer and winter energy consumption of these prototypes were simulated. The findings indicate that strategically planned urban vegetation morphology can significantly reduce building energy consumption.

An evidence-based framework for designing urban green infrastructure morphology to reduce urban building energy use in a hot-humid climate

Sijie Zhu et al.

Summary: Urban green infrastructures (UGIs) play a significant role in reducing urban building energy consumption. This study proposes a morphological design framework for UGI, based on evidence-based literature review and research findings. The framework suggests strategic design of UGI size, shape, location, connectivity, spatial pattern, and configuration to lower air temperature and building energy demand. It provides visual charts and technical principles as design strategies for urban energy savings.

Summary: Urban extreme high temperatures, harmful to human health and plants, can be alleviated by trees through transpiration and shading. A newly developed model integrating soil water balance and energy calculations evaluates the physiological responses and microclimate effects of street trees on temperature regulation. The shading effect of trees contributes the most to temperature reduction at midday.
