Implementing interventions to reduce antibiotic use: a qualitative study in high-prescribing practices

Aleksandra J. Borek et al.

Summary: Through focus group discussions in high-prescribing practices, professionals viewed delayed antibiotic prescriptions and point-of-care C-Reactive Protein testing not as effective clinical tools, but more as social tools for negotiating treatment decisions and educating patients. Ambiguities were identified regarding the timing and impact of these strategies, as well as contextual barriers to their implementation.

Evaluating the Implementation of a Pilot Quality Improvement Program to Support Appropriate Antimicrobial Prescribing in General Practice

Ruby Biezen et al.

Summary: Improper antimicrobial prescribing leads to increased antimicrobial resistance. An antimicrobial stewardship program was developed to optimize prescribing in general practice, including activities such as audit and feedback, clinical decision support, and education. The study evaluated the implementation of this program in three general practices in Melbourne, Australia, finding that the activities were acceptable to GPs if they aligned with their decision-making process and workflow. However, potential barriers identified were the time needed to coordinate the program and the costs of implementation.

Understanding the impact of a new pharmacy sore throat test and treat service on patient experience: A survey study

Efi Mantzourani et al.

Summary: The study found high levels of patient satisfaction with the Sore Throat Test and Treat service, with the pharmacist's consultation positively influencing patients' confidence in managing their condition. Patients valued the convenience and accessibility of the service, as well as the professionalism of the pharmacy team. This indicates a potential shift in health-seeking behavior towards pharmacist-led services, aligning with the long-term plan of governments in Wales and England to redirect management of uncomplicated conditions from GPs to pharmacies.
