Place-of-death preferences among patients with cancer and family caregivers in inpatient and outpatient palliative care

Marieberta Vidal et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the place-of-death preference among palliative care patients in an outpatient centre and a palliative care unit of a comprehensive cancer centre. The findings showed that although home was the preferred place of death, a substantial minority preferred hospital death or had no preference. Personalised assessment of place of death preference for both patient and caregiver is needed.

Continuity of GP care for patients with dementia: impact on prescribing and the health of patients

Joao Delgado et al.

Summary: The study found that higher continuity of GP care (CGPC) is associated with a reduced risk of potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) and adverse health outcomes (AHOs) in patients with dementia. Patients who consistently consult the same doctor have safer prescribing and lower rates of major adverse events.

Hospice care access inequalities: a systematic review and narrative synthesis

Conceptualising effective symptom management in palliative care: a novel model derived from qualitative data

Emma J. Chapman et al.

Summary: Effective symptom management in specialist palliative care requires a coordinated, multi-faceted, sequential approach involving engagement, partnership, decision-making, and delivery. Barriers include team discordance and lack of understanding about symptom management. Shared decision-making and coordination by a multi-disciplinary team are key components of effective symptom management.

Quality of life and quality of care as experienced by patients with advanced cancer and their relatives: A multicentre observational cohort study (eQuiPe)

Janneke van Roij et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the quality of life and quality of care experienced by patients with advanced cancer and their relatives, taking their interdependency into account. The results showed that patients and relatives had low levels of emotional functioning. Satisfaction with care and continuity of care were positively associated with emotional functioning. A family-centered approach is recommended to optimize palliative cancer care.

Continuity in general practice as predictor of mortality, acute hospitalisation, and use of out-of-hours care: a registry-based observational study in Norway

Hogne Sandvik et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the association between continuity with a named regular general practitioner (RCP) and the use of out-of-hours services, acute hospital admission, and mortality. The results indicate that a longer duration of the RGP-patient relationship is associated with lower utilization of out-of-hours services, fewer acute hospital admissions, and lower mortality rates.
