Impact of Institutional Breastfeeding Support in Very Low-Birth Weight Infants

Laura P. Ward et al.

Summary: The study found that hospital culture supportive of breastfeeding has a positive impact not only on healthy term infants, but also on very low-birth weight infants. Early initiation of milk expression significantly improves the provision of mother's milk feeding to preterm infants at discharge.

Positive Effects of Kangaroo Mother Care on Long-Term Breastfeeding Rates, Growth, and Neurodevelopment in Preterm Infants

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that kangaroo mother care (KMC) can significantly increase the proportion of breastfeeding in Chinese preterm infants, reduce feeding intolerance at discharge, and have positive effects on the body weight, body length, and head circumference of preterm infants. Additionally, KMC also helps with neurobehavioral development in preterm infants.

Promoting Human Milk and Breastfeeding for the Very Low Birth Weight Infant

Margaret G. Parker et al.

Summary: Providing mother's own milk for hospitalized very low birth weight infants in the NICU has short- and long-term health benefits. When mother's own milk is not available, pasteurized human donor milk is recommended as an alternative. Neonatal health care providers can support lactation in the NICU to reduce disparities in provision of mother's own milk.

Enhancing breastfeeding establishment in preterm infants: A randomized clinical trial of two non-nutritive sucking approaches

Sandra Fucile et al.

Summary: The study found that NNS on an emptied breast significantly increased the rate of preterm infants acquiring exclusive breastfeeding at hospital discharge compared to using a pacifier. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of time to achieve independent oral feeding and length of hospital stay.

Mother's Own Milk Feeding in Preterm Newborns Admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Special-Care Nursery: Obstacles, Interventions, Risk Calculation

Nadja Heller et al.

Summary: Early nutrition plays a significant role in the long-term health of newborns, with mother's own milk feeding showing benefits for preterm infants. However, challenges such as prematurity can hinder the initiation and continuation of mother's own milk feeding. By reviewing published evidence, modifiable factors like timing of skin-to-skin contact and strategies of milk expression can be identified to improve sustained mother's own milk feeding in preterm neonates.
