Can Molecular Biology Propose Reliable Biomarkers for Diagnosing Major Depression?

Nikolay N. Ivanets et al.

Summary: Modern medicine has provided knowledge on the pathophysiology of mental disorders, but reliable biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD) and other types of depression are still lacking. Research in genetics and neuroimaging shows promising results, but more efforts are needed to develop clinically useful biomarkers for different types of depression.

miR-92a-3p Promoted EMT via Targeting LATS1 in Cervical Cancer Stem Cells

Shuangyue Liu et al.

Summary: miR-92a-3p is upregulated in cervical cancer tissues and promotes proliferation, invasion and cell cycle transition. LATS1 acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting TAZ, E-cadherin, vimentin and cyclin E, and can partly reverse the effects of miR-92a-3p on cancer cell behaviors.

Herba Rhodiolae alleviates depression via the BDNF/TrkB-GSK-3β signaling pathway

Lili Gao et al.

Summary: The study showed that Herba Rhodiolae, venlafaxine, and a combination of Herba Rhodiolae and GSK-3 beta inhibitor were effective in alleviating depressive-like behaviors induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress in rats. The combination of Herba Rhodiolae and GSK-3 beta inhibitor showed the most significant effects in decreasing abnormalities in the glutamate system and autophagy of the brain, and promoting the BDNF/TrkB signaling pathway.

Prognostic plasma exosomal microRNA biomarkers in patients with substance use disorders presenting comorbid with anxiety and depression

Fengrong Chen et al.

Summary: This study explored the associations between exosomal miRNAs and anxiety and depression in SUD patients, finding significant negative correlations between specific miRNAs and anxiety scores, but less correlation with depression scores. The target genes of these miRNAs are mainly enriched in synapse, cell adhesion, and MHC class II protein complex.

Nrf2-BDNF-TrkB pathway contributes to cortical hemorrhage-induced depression, but not sex differences

Honglei Ren et al.

Summary: The downregulation of Nrf2-BDNF-TrkB signaling may contribute to the development of post-stroke depression, while the Nrf2 inducer TP-500 could potentially improve depression after cortical hemorrhage. Interestingly, depression was found to be more severe in female mice compared to male mice in the study.

MiR-221-3p and miR-92a-3p enhances smoking-induced inflammation in COPD

Yahui Shen et al.

Summary: The study found that COPD patients had higher levels of miR-221-3p and miR-92a-3p in their serum compared to healthy volunteers, which were effective biomarkers in diagnosing stable COPD from acute exacerbation COPD. Exposure to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) weakened the viability of 16HBECs and led to increased release of inflammatory cytokines. Suppression of miR-221-3p/miR-92a-3p expression in 16HBECs after transfection with inhibitors reduced CSE-induced inflammation, suggesting these miRNAs as potential diagnostic markers for COPD patients with a smoking history.

Retinoblastoma cell-derived exosomes promote angiogenesis of human vesicle endothelial cells through microRNA-92a-3p

Shuilian Chen et al.

Summary: Exosomes derived from retinoblastoma cells were found to enhance tumor angiogenesis, potentially through the action of miR-92a-3p. This suggests that exosomal miR-92a-3p could be a promising therapeutic candidate for retinoblastoma treatment.

Dendritic Spine Initiation in Brain Development, Learning and Diseases and Impact of BAR-Domain Proteins

Pushpa Khanal et al.

Summary: Dendritic spines are small protrusions along neuronal dendrites where most excitatory synapses are located. The density of dendritic spines changes significantly during brain development, with alterations corresponding to aberrant brain function in various neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. BAR domain-containing proteins, MIM/Mtss1 and SrGAP3, are involved in spine initiation, but the potential roles of other BAR-domain proteins in this process require further exploration.
