Separating vascular and neuronal effects of age on fMRI BOLD signals

Kamen A. Tsvetanov et al.

Summary: Accurate identification of brain function is necessary for understanding cognitive ageing, and fMRI is a common tool used for this purpose. However, studies on vascular ageing factors are limited, and current approaches focus on dissociating neuronal and vascular components of BOLD-fMRI. Emerging evidence suggests that vascular mechanisms in the brain have complex interactions that influence neuronal function.

Summary: In comparing age-related differences in resting-state functional connectivity over the adult lifespan, it is found that inter-individual variability increases later in life, potentially influenced by factors beyond age.

Age-Related Intrinsic Functional Connectivity Changes of Locus Coeruleus from Childhood to Older Adults

Inuk Song et al.

Summary: The locus coeruleus plays a critical role in modulating the brain's connectivity configuration for selective information processing. This study examined the intrinsic network connectivity of the locus coeruleus across different age groups, revealing age-related variations in connectivity patterns. The findings suggest that age-related distractibility may be linked to impaired sensory gating by the locus coeruleus and insufficient top-down controls by frontal regions.

Summary: With aging, attention decline in various aspects. Older adults demonstrate slower but more accurate performance in sustained attention tasks compared to younger adults, possibly due to a more prudent strategy that reduces false alarms.
