Life-threatening acute neutrophilic vasculitis in a Shar-Pei puppy

Christiane Weingart et al.

Summary: A 3-month old male Shar-Pei presented with lethargy, fever and cutaneous edema. Further investigations revealed superficial pyoderma with Streptococcus canis and an acute neutrophilic vasculitis. Symptomatic and antibiotic treatment, along with immunosuppressive treatment, were performed. Complications such as dyspnea, anemia, skin ulceration, skin necrosis, and secondary bacterial skin infection with multiresistant bacteria occurred. After intensive care treatment, the dog was discharged from the hospital 38 days later. The dosage of the immunosuppressants were gradually reduced and discontinued after 4 months.

A novel DNA chromatography method to discriminate Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies and macrolide susceptibility

Mitsunori Yoshida et al.

Summary: This study identified genetic markers for discriminating MABC subspecies using whole genome sequencing, and developed PCR and DNA chromatography assays for rapid detection. The DNA chromatography method showed high accuracy in identifying macrolide susceptibility in MABC isolates, with a 99.7% agreement rate with WGS-based identification.

Novel Models of Streptococcus canis Colonization and Disease Reveal Modest Contributions of M-Like (SCM) Protein

Ingrid Cornax et al.

Summary: The study investigated the virulence potential of Streptococcus canis, concluding that the SCM protein has modest contribution to invasive disease in murine models, but may contribute to mucosal persistence, highlighting the genetic diversity of SCM.

Prevalence of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) in Companion Animals: The First Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

Yusuf Wada et al.

Summary: The study utilized meta-analysis and a systematic review to analyze the prevalence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus in companion animals, estimating the overall prevalence to be around 14.6%, with dogs and cats having varying prevalence rates. Studies showed that Europe had more reports on VRE, with most studies using feces as samples and disc diffusion as the detection method.

Current Status of Antimicrobial Drug Use in Japanese Companion Animal Clinics and the Factors Associated With Their Use

Kohei Makita et al.

Summary: The Japanese National Action Plan aims to strengthen AMR surveillance in companion animals. The study estimated total antimicrobial drug use by companion animal clinics in Japan and found that clinic income per veterinarian was associated with total antimicrobial use. Recently established clinics with middle-aged and older directors tended to use important drugs in higher proportions among all antimicrobial drugs.

Influence of hospital size on antimicrobial resistance and advantages of restricting antimicrobial use based on cumulative antibiograms in dogs with Staphylococcus pseudintermedius infections in Japan

Keita Iyori et al.

Summary: The size of veterinary hospitals may impact the isolation rate of MRSP in dogs. Restricted use of antimicrobials for over a year based on cumulative antibiograms could reduce the resistance rate of multiple antimicrobials in SP isolated from dogs with pyoderma and OE.
