Factors affecting poor measles vaccination coverage in sub-Saharan Africa with a special focus on Nigeria: a narrative review

Omololuoye B. Majekodunmi et al.

Summary: This review explores the factors contributing to low measles vaccine coverage in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on Nigeria. Factors such as immunization system, information and communication, family characteristics, and parental attitudes and knowledge were identified as influencing vaccination rates. The study suggests that while some factors can be addressed at the country level through reforms, challenges related to family and community-specific factors require tailored solutions. Vaccination campaigns were found to be an effective strategy for improving coverage and reducing disparities.

Mapping routine measles vaccination in low- and middle-income countries

Alyssa N. Sbarra et al.

Summary: Despite the global recommendation of the safe and effective measles vaccine since 1974, there were over 17 million cases of measles in 2017, with the majority occurring in low- and middle-income countries. A study from 2000 to 2019 in 101 LMICs showed that after gains in measles vaccine coverage from 2000 to 2010, there was regression in coverage in over half of the districts from 2010 to 2019, with rural areas having lower coverage than urban areas.

Missed opportunities for vaccination in Africa

Olatunji Adetokunboh et al.

Summary: This review aimed to assess the missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV) in Africa and determine associated factors. Caregiver utilization, health service delivery, and healthcare worker factors were highlighted as important aspects. Understanding the extent of MOV in Africa provides an opportunity to address the differential factors contributing to MOV and bridge the gap in vaccination coverage on the continent.
