Global trends in incidence and death of neonatal disorders and its specific causes in 204 countries/territories during 1990-2019

Zejin Ou et al.

Summary: The global trend of neonatal disorders causing death has been decreasing from 1990 to 2019. However, the burden of neonatal disorders remains a significant challenge, especially in low-resource settings, indicating the need for more effective health strategies.

The Burden of Neonatal Diseases Attributable to Ambient PM 2.5 in China From 1990 to 2019

Jia Yuan et al.

Summary: The exposure level of newborns to PM 2.5 pollution in China is much higher than the global average, and PM2.5 concentration is positively correlated with neonatal disease deaths and DALYs. Despite the decrease in overall disease burden of neonatal diseases attributed to PM 2.5 pollution in China from 1990 to 2019, there is a need to focus on improving survival rates and reducing disability-related burden. Control of environmental pollution is likely to help reduce neonatal disease burden, especially premature birth and neonatal encephalopathy.

Time Trends in the Incidence of Spinal Pain in China, 1990 to 2019 and Its Prediction to 2030: The Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Jiehua Wei et al.

Summary: With the increasing aging population in China, spinal pain has become a major public health challenge. This study found that spinal pain has been a significant burden over the past 30 years in China and predicts that the burden will further increase in the future.

Maternal exposure to air pollutants, PCSK9 levels, fetal growth and gestational age - An Italian cohort

C. Macchi et al.

Summary: Exposure to air pollutants during early pregnancy is associated with increased PCSK9 levels, which in turn may lead to reduced gestational age at birth and higher risk of urgent cesarean delivery. This finding highlights the potential impact of environmental exposure on pregnancy outcomes.

Global, regional, and national progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 for neonatal and child health: all-cause and cause-specific mortality findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Katherine R. Paulson et al.

Summary: Global child mortality has significantly decreased between 2000 and 2019, with slower progress in neonatal deaths. 65 countries, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, are not on track to meet the SDG 3.2 targets by 2030. Focused improvements in perinatal and newborn care, continued and expanded delivery of essential interventions, enhanced focus on equity, poverty reduction, education, and investment in health systems have the potential to substantially improve under-5 mortality.
