Development of a Community-Driven Mosquito Surveillance Program for Vectors of La Crosse Virus to Educate, Inform, and Empower a Community

Rebecca T. Trout Fryxell et al.

Summary: The MEGA:BITESS program aims to engage students in mosquito surveillance for La Crosse virus through innovative STEM education, with the goal of increasing awareness of La Crosse encephalitis and reducing cases in children. By training educators in medical entomology, geospatial science, and science communication, the program supports inquiry-driven classroom learning and community-driven mosquito surveillance, while also enhancing awareness of LACE within the community.

Changes in Container-Breeding Mosquito Diversity and Abundance Along an Urbanization Gradient are Associated With Dominance of Arboviral Vectors

MyKenna Zettle et al.

Summary: Environmental conditions associated with urbanization have significant impacts on the composition and abundance of mosquito assemblages. This study examines how impervious cover and temperature variation affect container-breeding mosquito species in Maryland, USA. The results show that impervious cover and temperature have different effects on mosquito species, with temperature being a positive predictor of larval abundance and pupae occurrence.

Citizen science versus professional data collection: Comparison of approaches to mosquito monitoring in Germany

Nadja Pernat et al.

Summary: Research on the ecology and diversity of mosquito fauna has gained importance due to the emergence of invasive mosquito species and outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe. Active monitoring in Germany since 2011 and the 'Muckenatlas' citizen science project launched in 2012 have provided valuable data on mosquito populations. Differences in species composition and detection of invasive species were found between active and passive monitoring methods, highlighting the complementary nature of both approaches.

Differential inhibition of egg hatching in Aedes aegypti populations from localities with different winter conditions

Raul E. Campos et al.

Summary: The study found that populations of Aedes aegypti from colder regions exhibit an adaptive inhibition of egg hatching. The geographic origin of the populations and immersion temperature were the primary factors influencing the egg hatching response.

La Crosse Virus Disease in the United States, 2003-2019

Grace M. Vahey et al.

Summary: La Crosse virus is a mosquito-transmitted virus that mainly affects children and causes encephalitis and meningitis. The virus is most commonly reported in the Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic, and southeastern regions of the United States. Surveillance data may underestimate the true incidence of LACV disease.
