Adipose-tissue plasticity in health and disease

Alexander Sakers et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue, known as fat, plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological aspects of the body. Its high plasticity allows for significant changes in metabolism, structure, and phenotype in response to physiological stimuli. Limitations in this plasticity contribute to decreased or aberrant responses to physiological cues, leading to the progression of cardiometabolic disease.

RNA-Seq reveals miRNA role in thermogenic regulation in brown adipose tissues of goats

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed landscape of miRNA expression in goat brown adipose tissue (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT). It is found that miR-433 acts as a negative regulator in controlling brown adipocyte differentiation and thermogenesis in goats.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.

NONCODEV6: an updated database dedicated to long non-coding RNA annotation in both animals and plants

Lianhe Zhao et al.

Summary: NONCODE is a comprehensive database focusing on the collection and annotation of noncoding RNAs, especially long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in animals. The latest version, NONCODEV6, not only covers lncRNAs in plants and animals, but also provides updated human lncRNA-disease relationships, tissue expression profiles and predicted function of lncRNAs in common plants, as well as conservation annotation of lncRNAs at transcript level for 23 plant species.

Ioanna Kalvari et al.

Summary: Rfam is a database of RNA families with 3444 families, each represented by a multiple sequence alignment of known RNA sequences and a covariance model for searching additional members. Recent developments focused on improving data quality and coverage, adding new families like microRNAs, viral and bacterial RNAs through expert collaborations. The database saw significant growth with 759 new families added in Rfam 14, along with new features such as the Rfam Cloud family curation system.

Endogenous Fatty Acid Synthesis Drives Brown Adipose Tissue Involution

Christian Schlein et al.

Summary: The study found that endogenous fatty acid synthesis is the central regulator of BAT involution, determining organelle turnover and function by transcriptional control of lipogenesis-related enzymes. ChREBP deficiency and pharmacological inhibition of lipogenesis preserved mitochondrial mass and thermogenic capacity of BAT during thermoneutral adaptation.

Senescent T Cell Induces Brown Adipose Tissue Whitening Via Secreting IFN-γ

Xiao-Xi Pan et al.

Summary: Aging-associated chronic inflammation is a key factor contributing to chronic metabolic disorders. Research shows an accumulation of T cells in adipose tissue in old mice, with a cross talk between T cells and preadipocytes contributing to tissue remodeling. Senescent T cells were found to inhibit brown adipocyte differentiation in adipose tissue, with increased production of IFN-gamma identified as a critical mechanism.

Morphological changes and functional circRNAs screening of rabbit skeletal muscle development

Qi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study observed structural changes in skeletal muscle and obtained circRNA expression profiles at different stages in hind leg muscles of fetus, child, and adult rabbits. The study identified differentially expressed circRNAs and genes, and found circRNAs with potential coding or miRNA sponge capability. These findings provide insights into the functional transitions in mammalian muscle development.

MiR-22 modulates brown adipocyte thermogenesis by synergistically activating the glycolytic and mTORC1 signaling pathways

Pengbo Lou et al.

Summary: The study revealed that miR-22 expression is upregulated in brown adipose tissue (BAT) in response to cold exposure and differentiation, and its deficiency impairs BAT thermogenic capacity. miR-22 regulates BAT thermogenesis by activating the mTORC1 signaling pathway and promoting glycolysis.
