Effects of catheter-based renal denervation on heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Hidekatsu Fukuta et al.

Summary: Despite the major progress in heart failure treatment, the burden of heart failure is increasing in the Western world. Recent studies have shown that catheter-based renal denervation (RDN) may have potential benefits in improving left ventricular function and exercise capacity in heart failure patients with reduced EF.

The randomised Oslo study of renal denervationvs.Antihypertensive drug adjustments: efficacy and safety through 7 years of follow-up

Ola Undrum Bergland et al.

Summary: The blood pressure (BP) lowering effect of renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) in treatment-resistant hypertension shows variation amongst the existing randomised studies. Our data support RDN as a safe procedure, but it remains non-superior to intensive drug adjustment 7 years after the intervention. The decrease in office BP and ambulatory BP (ABPM) after 6 months did not persist, but gradually increased in both groups.

Evidence of Reduced Efferent Renal Sympathetic Innervation After Chemical Renal Denervation in Humans

Summary: The study investigated the sympathetic innervation of the renal cortex following renal denervation (RDN) in humans, showing efferent sympathetic denervation of the kidneys. This finding may help explain the variability in blood pressure lowering effects observed in clinical trials.

Renal Sympathetic Denervation in Patients With Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Summary: Arterial hypertension is a common comorbidity in patients with HFpEF, leading to adverse hemodynamics. RDN may improve hemodynamics in HFpEF patients, reducing LV stiffness and diastolic pressures.
