Biosynthetic Pathway and Metabolic Engineering of Succinic Acid

Xiutao Liu et al.

Summary: Succinic acid, an important platform chemical, shows potential as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical synthesis processes due to its renewable production methods. By utilizing metabolic engineering approaches, such as redirecting carbon flux and optimizing CO2 supplementation, the production of succinic acid can be optimized. Future perspectives on microbial production of succinic acid are also discussed.

Optimization of bio-succinic fermentation process from crude glycerol by Actinobacillus succinogenes

Suwimon Kanchanasuta et al.

Summary: The study found that higher succinic acid concentration and glycerol utilization rate can be achieved when using crude glycerol supplemented with MgCO3; different alkaline salts have different effects on the fermentation process of bio-succinic acid; acetic acid tends to increase gradually in fed-batch and semi-continuous operations, leading to lower product yield and substrate utilization efficiency.

Isolation and Characterization of Enterococcus faecalis-Infecting Bacteriophages From Different Cheese Types

Beatriz del Rio et al.

Summary: Enterococci are a diverse group of Gram-positive, lactic acid bacteria that can be found in various environments, including fermented foods, posing a health threat and hospital-acquired infections due to antimicrobial resistance. Bacteriophages are ideal biotechnological weapons for controlling bacterial growth, but require a combination of phages with different host ranges. The isolation of Enterococcus faecalis-infecting bacteriophages from cheese samples adds to the potential arsenal for bacteriophage-based biocontrol of harmful E. faecalis populations.

Platform molecule from sustainable raw materials; case study succinic acid

Alaa Salma et al.

Summary: Platform molecules, such as succinic acid, are bio-based chemicals derived from biomass which can be used as building blocks for various valuable chemicals and materials. There is a growing demand for finding a cheaper and cleaner way to produce platform molecules from renewable resources like carbon, in order to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This review highlights mechanisms, processing technologies, genetic engineering, and alternative purification processes in the production of platform molecules, especially succinic acid.

Production of High Added-Value Chemicals in Basfia succiniciproducens: Role of Medium Composition

Hunor Bartos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the population growth dynamics and succinic acid production potential of Basfia succiniciproducens under different substrate conditions. Glucose was found to be the preferred carbon source, and the addition of yeast extract significantly affected biomass formation. The strain cultured in minimal salt medium showed a potential for high succinic acid production.
