Comparative analysis of microbial communities from different full-scale haloalkaline biodesulfurization systems

Suyash Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, the bacterial composition of the biodesulfurization process was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Thioalkalivibrio sulfidiphilus was found to be the dominant species, consistent with previous studies. The composition of the feed gas and its components had a significant impact on the microbial community composition.

Continuous electron shuttling by sulfide oxidizing bacteria as a novel strategy to produce electric current

Rieks de Rink et al.

Summary: Sulfide oxidizing bacteria are able to remove sulfide from solution under anaerobic conditions and shuttle electrons to the anode of an electrochemical cell to generate electricity. The current density is found to be dependent on the sulfide loading rate, and biological growth mainly occurs at the anode as biofilm.

BacDive in 2022: the knowledge base for standardized bacterial and archaeal data

Lorenz Christian Reimer et al.

Summary: BacDive, the bacterial metadatabase, has become a leading database for standardized prokaryotic data on strain level, offering a wealth of information for bacterial and archaeal strains. The database has seen a 30% increase in data over the past three years, with new features such as a query builder tool and an interactive dashboard for statistical overview. Improved genomic sequence data and integration with other databases further enhance the usability and accessibility of the data.

Mechanism of Hydrogen Sulfide-Dependent Inhibition of FeFe Hydrogenase

Christina Felbek et al.

Summary: The study investigates the inhibitory mechanism of hydrogen sulfide on FeFe hydrogenase through a combination of various experimental and theoretical methods, revealing the underlying mechanisms and providing insights into the oxidation and reduction of the enzyme. Additionally, it was observed that the inhibition by sulfide may lead to irreversible inactivation of the hydrogenase.

Effect of process conditions on the performance of a dual-reactor biodesulfurization process

Rieks de Rink et al.

Summary: The biotechnological gas desulfurization process under haloalkaline conditions involves a dual-reactor lineup with an anaerobic step, leading to high selectivity for elemental sulfur and reduced formation of (thio)sulfate. Experiments showed that high selectivities for S8 formation were achieved in most cases, except when the pH in the aerated bioreactor was increased. Additionally, biological sulfide uptake in the anaerobic bioreactor increased at higher sulfide concentrations and pH levels, indicating a relationship with polysulfide formation.
