High titer cellulosic ethanol production from sugarcane bagasse via DLCA pretreatment and process development without washing/detoxifying pretreated biomass

Guannan Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigated a novel and cost-effective pretreatment method, DLCA, for sugarcane bagasse (SCB) to enhance its cellulosic ethanol production. The results showed that DLCA(sa)-SCB had high enzymatic digestibility and fermentability, and the simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) process achieved a high ethanol titer. This study presents a promising approach for efficient bioconversion of SCB into ethanol.

Beyond sugar and ethanol: The future of sugarcane biorefineries in Brazil

L. P. S. Vandenberghe et al.

Summary: Sugarcane has become an important renewable raw material that can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease the dependence on fossil fuels. Brazilian government policies have created favorable conditions for the establishment of the first sugarcane biorefinery, which aims to produce biofuels, sugar, and bioelectricity in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. The development of 2G and 3G technologies further expands the potential of sugarcane for producing value-added biochemicals and reducing emissions through integrated systems with a non-waste vision and circular bioeconomy.

Towards efficient enzymatic saccharification of pretreated lignocellulose: Enzyme inhibition by lignin-derived phenolics and recent trends in mitigation strategies

Rui Zhai et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biorefinery based on sugar-platform is considered an efficient strategy to replace fossil fuel-based refinery. However, various inhibitors, such as phenolic compounds, are generated during the pretreatment process, severely affecting the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. This review summarizes the formation mechanism of phenolics in different pretreatment methods and discusses the key factors influencing their inhibitory effects. It also introduces recent achievements in inhibition mitigation strategies to enhance cellulose hydrolysis for sugar-platform biorefinery.

Sugarcane biorefineries: potential opportunities towards shifting from wastes to products

Juliana Freitas et al.

Summary: Biorefining is a sustainable process that converts biomass into marketable products like food, chemicals, and bioenergy, with sugarcane processing as a successful example. While most sugarcane mills currently produce first generation ethanol, sugar, and energy, the move towards second generation ethanol production is gaining traction. Integrated biorefineries can be an attractive investment option for a low-carbon economy, converting the entire sugarcane biomass into bioenergy and bio-based products.
