Granulation and response of anaerobic granular sludge to allicin stress while treating allicin-containing wastewater

Hang Peng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that AnGS cultivated under allicin stress showed excellent settleability and high COD removal efficiency, with tightly bound EPS and PN promoting the formation and tolerance of AnGS. Short-chain and long-chain AHLs played crucial roles in AnGS formation, while certain bacterial genera exhibited significant resistance to allicin.

Pilot-scale fermentation of urban food waste for volatile fatty acids production: The importance of pH

Peng Yu et al.

Summary: A pilot-scale system producing volatile fatty acids from food waste under acidic conditions was established, with pH level of 6.5 resulting in the highest VFAs yield and increased proportion of butyric acid. Microbial analysis identified dominant bacteria that positively influence the acidification process. This study provides valuable insights for large-scale treatment of food waste.

Freezing pretreatment assists potassium ferrate to promote hydrogen production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Jiawei Hu et al.

Summary: A novel high-efficiency technology combining freezing with potassium ferrate (PF) was reported for promoting hydrogen production in sludge anaerobic fermentation. The combined treatment showed positive synergetic effect on hydrogen production, enhancing the potential and rate of hydrogen production while accelerating sludge disintegration. Gene sequencing analysis revealed enrichment of hydrolytic and hydrogen generating bacteria in the combined pretreatment fermenter, with notable enhancement in dewatering performances of fermented sludge.

In-situ formation and self-immobilization of biogenic Fe oxides in anaerobic granular sludge for enhanced performance of acidogenesis and methanogenesis

Yu Zheng et al.

Summary: A novel method was attempted to incorporate Fe oxides into AGS by in-situ microbial formation and immobilization of biogenic Fe oxides, resulting in a maximum loading amount of 83.9 mg Fe/g MLVSS. Presence of Fe oxides in AGS increased the production of VFAs and methane by 16.28% and 41.94% respectively, possibly due to increased conductivity and stimulated growth of exoelectrogens and methanogenic endoelectrogens.
