The current definition, epidemiology, animal models and a novel therapeutic strategy for aspiration pneumonia

Shinji Teramoto

Summary: Aspiration pneumonia is a common and increasingly prevalent condition among older patients. It is primarily caused by micro-aspiration due to dysphagia during the night. Accurate assessment of swallowing function is crucial for diagnosing aspiration pneumonia. Treatment options include appropriate administration of antibiotics, comprehensive management of dysphagia, as well as non-pharmacologic approaches such as swallowing rehabilitation and oral care.
