Microscopy analysis neural network to solve detection, enumeration and segmentation from image-level annotations

Anthony Bilodeau et al.

Summary: This study proposes a weakly supervised MICRoscopy Analysis neural network (MICRA-Net) that can be trained on a simple main classification task using image-level annotations to solve more complex tasks such as semantic segmentation. MICRA-Net relies on extracted latent information from a trained model to achieve similar performances as established architectures, reducing the annotation burden in microscopy datasets.

Segmentation of cellular patterns in confocal images of melanocytic lesions in vivo via a multiscale encoder-decoder network (MED-Net)

Kivanc Kose et al.

Summary: In this study, an automated semantic segmentation method called MED-Net was proposed for pixel-wise labeling of optical microscopic images in a quantitative manner. With patient-wise cross-validation on a large dataset collected from multiple clinics, the model achieved high pixel-wise sensitivity and specificity. Comparisons against state-of-the-art models showed that MED-Net performed better in quantitative segmentation and produced more coherent annotations due to its nested multiscale architecture.

Fully automatic detection and classification of phytoplankton specimens in digital microscopy images

David Rivas-Villar et al.

Summary: The study introduces a fully automatic methodology for phytoplankton analysis in digital microscopy images, which can accurately detect and classify different phytoplankton specimens into defined target species. The system shows high precision and accuracy in identifying and categorizing phytoplankton, providing a robust tool for specialists in water quality analysis.

Improved online event detection and differentiation by a simple gradient-based nonlinear transformation: Implications for the biomedical signal and image analysis

Anastasia Sokolova et al.

Summary: Despite recent success in advanced signal analysis technologies, there is still interest in simple and universal methods for applications requiring online signal analysis and early event detection algorithms. The proposed gradient-based approach shows improved accuracy in detecting significant bursts in observational data series, regardless of their shapes, compared to conventional solutions. This approach is also applicable to tasks such as analyzing ECG cycles and electrophoretic gel images, with freely available software for the latter.
