Shape Memory Behavior of Biocompatible Polyurethane Stereoelastomers Synthesized via Thiol-Yne Michael Addition

Yen-Hao Hsu et al.

Summary: Biodegradable shape memory elastomers show great potential for various applications such as soft tissue engineering, drug delivery, and device fabrication. In this study, a series of unsaturated polyurethanes were designed and synthesized to meet the requirements of long-term implantable devices in terms of degradation and mechanical properties. The alkene stereochemistry of the materials could be tuned, and the materials showed cyclic shape memory behavior. The in vitro degradation properties were found to be highly dependent on the alkene stereochemistry.

Concomitant control of mechanical properties and degradation in resorbable elastomer-like materials using stereochemistry and stoichiometry for soft tissue engineering

Mary Beth Wandel et al.

Summary: The study reports a series of resorbable elastomer-like materials with varying ratios of cis:trans double bonds in the backbone, allowing for control over mechanical and surface eroding degradation properties. These materials can be functionalized post-polymerization with bioactive species to enhance cell adhesion, and show limited inflammation in an in vivo rat model, highlighting their potential for use in soft tissue regeneration and drug delivery. Creating biomaterials that are resorbable with biomimetic mechanical properties is crucial for successful tissue engineering.

Stereochemistry-Controlled Mechanical Properties and Degradation in 3D-Printable Photosets

Anissa L. Khalfa et al.

Summary: Stereochemistry is a powerful tool to modify the mechanical properties and degradation rates of photocurable materials by controlling the stereochemistry of pre-resin oligomers. The synthesis of stereopure pre-polymers and retention of stereochemistry during UV-triggered crosslinking enable the formulation of materials with different mechanical properties. This approach allows for the creation of high-resolution, three-dimensional printed scaffolds with varying stiffness, toughness, and degradability from the same components.

Crosslinked Internal Alkyne-Based Stereo Elastomers: Polymers with Tunable Mechanical Properties

Yen-Hao Hsu et al.

Summary: Researchers have extensively explored new methods to introduce and control polymer network crosslinking to improve mechanical properties of materials. This study outlines a new method to crosslink well-defined, synthetic elastomers using click reactions, showing that tuning the stoichiometry can adjust the glass-transition temperature and mechanical properties of resulting copolymers. The density of crosslinking within the network has been shown to control tensile modulus and recovery in hysteresis tests.
