Communities of T4-like bacteriophages associated with bacteria in Lake Baikal: diversity and biogeography

Sergey Anatoljevich Potapov et al.

Summary: Lake Baikal phage communities play a crucial role in the functioning of the lake ecosystem. This study investigated the diversity of T4-bacteriophage associated with bacterial fractions in different areas of Lake Baikal. It was found that the phage communities in shallow bays were distinct from those in the pelagic and coastal zones. Furthermore, the sequences of phages in Lake Baikal showed differences from both marine and freshwater environments. These findings highlight the differences in viral communities and diversity between different locations and ecosystems in Lake Baikal.

Diversity and potential biogeochemical impacts of viruses in bulk and rhizosphere soils

Li Bi et al.

Summary: The study on viral diversity and functions in agricultural soils revealed significant differences in viral community composition between bulk and rhizosphere soils, with soil pH as the main environmental driver. Additionally, abundant auxiliary carbohydrate-active enzyme genes were found in viromes, indicating potential impacts on bacterial metabolism and biogeochemical cycling, especially carbon cycling, in agricultural soil.

Viromes outperform total metagenomes in revealing the spatiotemporal patterns of agricultural soil viral communities

Christian Santos-Medellin et al.

Summary: Viruses play a significant role in soil environments, influencing biogeochemical cycles, and their diversity can be better studied through viromics methods. The viral and microbial communities showed significant differences over time and spatially, with some similarities in dynamics during the tomato growing season. However, there were indications of partial decoupling in the processes governing their spatial distributions.

Interactive Tree Of Life (iTOL) v5: an online tool for phylogenetic tree display and annotation

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.
