Specific Gray Matter Volume Changes of the Brain in Unipolar and Bipolar Depression

Junyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified common and specific structural changes in gray matter volume in patients with bipolar depression (BD) and unipolar depression (UD), suggesting different neurophysiological underpinnings for BD and UD. The results contribute to discriminating between UD and BD based on biological morphometric changes.

Anterior cingulate cortex neurometabolites in bipolar disorder are influenced by mood state and medication: A meta-analysis of 1H-MRS studies

Estevao Scotti-Muzzi et al.

Summary: The ACC plays a key role in connecting the frontal cortex to limbic structures and is consistently implicated in the neurobiology of Bipolar Disorder. H-1-MRS studies comparing neurometabolite levels in the ACC of BD patients and healthy controls found increased levels of Glx, Gln, choline, and Cho/Creatine in BD. Different mood states and medication status were associated with specific neurometabolite patterns in the ACC.

Effect of rTMS on GABA and glutamate levels in treatment-resistant depression: An MR spectroscopy study

Kate E. M. Godfrey et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of rTMS on GABA and Glx levels using H1MRS. The results showed a significant increase in Glx levels in both the left DLPFC and right motor cortex voxels, but this increase did not correlate with antidepressant response.

Occipital gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamate-glutamine alterations in major depressive disorder: An mrs study and meta-analysis

Vuong Truong et al.

Summary: Research using magnetic resonance spectroscopy found no differences in occipital GABA and Glx concentrations between patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and healthy controls. Extended analysis also did not find correlations between metabolite concentrations and depressive symptoms. Overall, studies suggest that previously reported differences in GABA and Glx levels between MDD patients and controls may have been influenced by factors such as measurement accuracy.
