Transposable elements promote the evolution of genome streamlining

Bram van Dijk et al.

Summary: TEs are believed to drive genome expansion in eukaryotes, but prokaryotes have streamlined genomes. Using a simulation model, this study found that TEs can promote genome streamlining by local interactions and rock-paper-scissors dynamics. Streamlining is maladaptive to individual cells, but hinders TE proliferation and improves lineage viability.

Insertion-sequence-mediated mutations both promote and constrain evolvability during a long-term experiment with bacteria

Jessika Consuegra et al.

Summary: The study shows that IS elements play an important role in bacterial genomic evolution and adaptation, with mutations they cause being either beneficial or harmful. IS-mediated mutations can promote adaptive evolution, but excessive IS activity over time may limit evolutionary possibilities.

How sequence populations persist inside bacterial genomes

Hye Jin Park et al.

Summary: Bacterial genomes contain tightly packed genes with rare but persistent repetitive sequences, such as the REPINs. These sequences can either drive the host to extinction or be purged from the genome, depending on their benefits and costs to the host. In regimes with high horizontal gene transfer rates, the benefits of the sequence population do not have to exceed the harm it causes to the host for the sequence population to persist.

Summary: REP, diverse palindromic DNA sequences found at high copy number in many bacterial genomes, have important roles in cell physiology. In vitro experiments reveal the interaction between TnpA(REP) and REPs with different structures.
